............"hoid" on 1010 WINS that there are scathing reports on the conditions of the subway yards at 180th and 239th; shop buildings with leaking roofs (damaging tools and electrical gearr), broken windows, ill-maintained track....well, you get the picture. Sad

I know that the old INTERBOUGH buildings at 180th hae been torn down and replaced with modern structures

Should he just kept up the old IRT-era shops..................

All on the "Eye-Are-Tee" . . . the two different R-36 orders - the 390 for the Flushing line, the 34 for the "mainlines," in 1963-64. All by Hunter Illuminated Sign Co.

Of course, the "foist" mylar roll signs were made for the R-32's . . .

Remembering..................

I still well recall those dark days of the early/mid-1980s, when the IRT "SMEE" fleet looked as though they had been totally trashed. Sad

Vivid memories still of side roller sign boxes where the roller curtains were torn, ripped, and snagged in the gears. Sad

Still VCLEARY recall riding on an uptown 7th Avenue rush hour express, c-1982, aboard a battle-scarred "R-12/14", and staring at a torn, askew "POLO GROUNDS" reading over one of the windows.....talk about a time warp! Shocked Wink

"Progess"............ Razz

Eyewitness Newsat 4 had a reportthat informed us that a massive signal update is forthcoming on the IND's "A" and "C" lines; "....obsolete signals nearly 100 years old will be replaced with state-of-the-art CBTC signalling......"

Stock footage showed "Brightliners" on the "C". and "44s"/"46s"on the "A".

Of course, Mr."Jan-O" Hwas gleefully promoting the future of modern subway signalling. Razz

Looks like the IIND's 8th Avenue lines block signals will be gone long before the 100th anniversary of the IND in 2032.......... :cr

No doubt timed so that by the time all this is done, the last of the R-68's (a.k.a. "Brighton Belles") would have been retired.

UPDATE (1010 WINS)........

An ECSTATIC "Mr. JAN-oh"...............

"......we areF FINALLY saying 'goodbye' to signals from the 1930s that are nearly 100 years old......they should be relegated to the Transit Museum................." Sad

First work will be to replace the switches and long stretches of track; final signal wok will be completed in 2032 (ironic, that would be the 100th anniversary of the IND)

Just as well, I guess, with now RFWs on the trains any more, to provide us with a fascinating "motorman's iew" of the approaching switches and signals......ahhh, how I value my many years of memories, stationed at the RFW........

........when tthe massive IND "rehab" program is cpmpleted in 2032, the subway fleet will be all "NTT".

With so many dangerous ,malicious "AI" cyber attacks in the news these days,, I shudder to thinkof a MAJOR subway meltfown, with NO backup signa lling on hand.

Of course, I am sure that the forward-thinking "Mr. Jan-oh!" will STILL be singing the praises of modern CBTC signalling........ Razz

Only a matter of time, I guess, before we hear of electrical fires on the order of many well-publicized PATH incidences - and they too are all-CBTC today.

W.B.:

Indeed, if some sort of "cyber meltdown" were to rear its ugly head, we BOTH know that "the tubes" would NOT be immune.......like the "Em-tee-Yay", the "Pee-Yat" had no thought of utilizing a backup signal system,in case o fCBTC failure.

I wonder ho w this wil eventually leffect future "Nostalgia Specials", using vintage rolling stock NOT equipped for CBTC operattion...........
