Just thought of this...........
in 1953's "ABBOT & COSTELLO GO TO MARS", the boy's rocket ship, back kon Earth, ends up zipping through the Lincoln Tunnel (then only two tubes)
We see the helix and toll plaza, and assorted vehicles.
Exiting on the Manhattan side, we see traffic entering the Jerseu bound- portal, which affords us a quick glimpse of a "suboiban" Old Look, emitting a puff of exhist! (could not tell what company it was rostered by)
Had to mention this.......

That reminds me. From c.1973 to the late 1980's, most of A&C's films were late Sunday morning staples on WPIX (Channel 11). As well as their 1952-54 TV show. A&C Go To Mars was among the many they showed in rotation for that time period. Talk about something that was once a given, but has gone the way of those Old Looks (and New Looks), RTS's, etc. |

W.B;
As my older brothers (then nlong since married) and I watched the old "A&C films every Sunday morning, from 11:30 to 1PM (Old Looks GALORE in 1942's "PARDON MY SARONG"!)
We also watched on WNEW 5 the "Bowery Boys"series (sometimes dubbed "East Side Comedy")
While the show was still being aired, NEVER missed the "ABBOTT & COSTELLO" sh ow (recall the ever-harried Mr. Fields, and the lovely Hillary Brooke, not tomention Joe Besser's "Stinky", and "beat cop"Mike?)
And BOTH of the "boyz" were "JOISEY" boys!!! (Paterson and Asbury Park!)
"NYO"
(recall, also, the animated felines "Babbitt & Catsello", who appeared in severa; 1940s "Tweety" cartoons?)
["WPIX 11"]

| The whole Eastern block of 10th and 39th has been way sealed off while one of the lanes is being led to one of the entry points presumably to the Lincoln Tunnel; a 'ONLY BUS' (so arranged because of the way the buses are pointed) is shown on that lane. |

Joe:
GOOD to see you back;your input has ideed been missed!
Today, as you know, virtually all bus commuters arrive via NJT.
Today, these old carriers have now disappeared:
PSNJ
ORANGE & BLACK
INTER-CITYY
NORTHEAST COACHES
RED & TAN
SOMERSET
SURBAN
MANHATTAN LINES
LINCOLN TANSIT
WESTWOOD COACHES
Too, New Jersey has gone through many major demographic changes over the pastseveral decades, and many foirmer commuters now work from home.
Indeed, the bus commutation scene is a far different one than it was in 1960................

It wasn't 'Joe' that brought that update, it was I, W.B.
I have another:
I'm seeing on both the 38th and 39th Street sides of the block between Ninth and Tenth, a lot of construction-related stuff on the sidewalk - and TWO cranes on the block between 37th and 38th. (Of course, with the Nor'easter, no work'll be done for the duration.) |

Thanks for the update; looks like once things dry out, some really heavy duty work will be starting up.

All the old bus parking lots are being filled in, and I saw supervisors stationed in various places where construction is going on. As well, there is a parking lot on Tenth Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets that will close permanently today (the 30th). What that means is anyone's guess. |

W.B.:
Sounds like things are starting to "heat up", so to speak, in the area.
IMHO, the old bus lots lost all their appeal once the last Fishbowls and "Dangerfield" were retired; after that, well, it's hard to get excited over a vast sea of lookalike white and black shoeboxes.
I'm only fortunate to have so many great memories of the old "Port-of-Authority", back in its heyday..............
