This might have been brought up awhile back...........
When the last "stoa" Fishbowls were retired, were they still running on "stoa" routes, or had they been, by that time, re-assigned to other depots and non-"stoa" routes?
Appreciate info...............

One of my all-time favorite classic "stoa" photos, taken in 1974 (interesting to see a "stoa" bus in Brooklyn!)

This wasn't Brooklyn. It was in Astoria, Queens. What is not known is whether this was the route to Astoria that came from Manhattan over the Triboro (as recast in July 1974 as M35) or from the Bronx (renumbered Bx21 at the same time). Very likely the future M35, given the "M102" showing on the front roll sign.

Again, this might have been touched ipon elsewhere.......
When was the "TB" route initiated?
What was its route? (and terminals)
How was the route re-configured in later years (also, when was the "TB" designation eliminated?)
Thanks in advance.....

Man, the "TB" route goes back MUCH further than I thought!
That old YELLOW,indeed, appears to have lead areal "rough and tumble" life on the streets of "Noo Yawk", for sure!
GREAT photo!

'TB' was inaugurated in July of 1936, and had the distinction of being the only NYCO route to have been started from scratch and not converted from an older streetcar route (the New York Railways network) or acquired from other companies (such as Green Bus Lines' three Manhattan routes, or in 1940, Triangle Bus' franchises). The 'TB' designation was eliminated on July 1, 1974, upon which the Manhattan-Wards Island leg was rebranded M34; the Manhattan-Astoria branch, M35; and the Bronx-Astoria route, Bx21. In 1976, M34 was eliminated and its route consolidated with M35. On 1974 " 'stoa" side signs for "Dangerfields," they were the only routes to mention end destinations a la "Tee-Yay" side signs:
M34 Lexington Avenue
M34 Wards Island
M34 Randalls Island
M35 Lexington Avenue
M35 Astoria Boulevard
Bx21 Bruckner Boulevard
Bx21 Astoria Boulevard
By 1975, these routes - which had up to that point pingponged between 146th Street and 100th Street depots every few years - had been moved to the ex-FACCo depot on 132nd Street (as was the M20 - 116th Street Crosstown, the second such route to bear the #20 number to be assigned there - after FACCo's own 57th Street crosstown which, in 1974, became M28, and is today M57).
The Bx21 was eliminated in 1984 due to it being the lowest-ridden of the three bridge routes. The Manhattan-Astoria wing was discontinued about 20 years ago after the M60 to LaGuardia Airport was started up. Only the M35 to Wards and Randalls Islands still stands today.
It's interesting that there are no photos taken at any of those points (Manhattan, Astoria or "da Bronx") after the July 1974 changes to the route designations.
As for that weather-beaten 740 - NYCO's maintenance practices veered between the "spit and polish" of FACCo and the shoddy, bankruptcy-influenced neglect of "Soiface" which saw so many buses get old before their time.

| The bus in the photo I posted and as of December 28,1950 bus numbers 422-431 were assigned to the TB route and based out of 146 Street Depot.

| Like I said . . . no photos taken in the affected areas after mid-1974 and the changes in route designations.

W.B.:
Perhaps this had something to do, at least in part, with certain areas of town became increasingly unsafe?
