1971..........

Derelict, soon-to-be-scrapped "Kramdens" and Fishbowls sit in silent solitude, as an 'Arnine" train goes about its humble duties.......

Early Fishbowl retirement..............

Odd (at least IMHO) that the "Em-Tee-Yay" was already retiring some of its oldest Fishbowls by the early 1970s; here in "Joisey", the ex-PS "Jetsons" (transits) lasted up to about 1980.

"Jetson" suburbans lasted into the early "En-Jay-Tee" era.

And, even stranger, some "Jetson" Fishbowls lasted into the early 1980s on certain "Em-Tee-Yay" routes..........go figure........ Question

Now, at least, this veteran "Jetson" did not end up prematurely retired, and crammed to the narrow confines of the oil-soaked space between the BMT ramps at Fresh Pond, along with other unfortunate fleet members.

Ah, yes, the 1962 "Jetson" set - no doubt the longest lasting of that lot. The ones that the WNEW-TV reporter snidely referred to as "decades-old clunkers" during the Grumman "Borough Bomber" fiasco . . . how was it that the oldest (1959) "Jetsons" were put out to pasture relatively early, while the later ones had a longer run?

W.B.:

You said it!

I STILL recall that WNEW report, wellover 40 years ago, showing several "reserve" Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" pulling out of a garage, with the reporter referring to these veteran buses as "decade-and-a-half-old clunkers".

'Clunkers"?

Look no further than the ill-fated "Borough Bombers"(or today's "BINOS')......Sad Razz

Just was thinking..........

The very last of the ex-PS/TNJ Fishbowl (transits) (at least from my area) by about 1990; by the time the "foist" RTS began arriving in the later 1990s, all of the ex-PSNJ Fishbowls were already long gone...... Sad

Sounds like the RTS's were late arriving to NJ. What was being used between the time they arrived and the Fishbowls retired? Flxible Metros?

Cyberider:

NJT began receiving both re-conditioned/rebuilt ex-MTA GRUMMANs as well as new METRO "Bs";the old suburban Fishbowls were being replaced by MCIs, as well as VOLVO artics (thee artics were among the WORST buses operated by NJT.

There were also transit versions (VOLVO) in service.

The NJDOT Flex New Looks (if memory serves me correctly) were gone prior to 2000)

By the 2010s, the faithful METEO "Bs" were replaced by NANIs (aka oversized milk cartons).........
