Looks like the days of "REAL" streetcars seeking asylum at railway museums after retirement is now a thing of the past........ Sad

Doesn't look worth saving but I suppose some of the younger set might disagree.

Cyberider:

At most trolley/rail museums nowadats, much of the volunteer "base" is aging, and, sadly, passing on.

I've read that, each year, at these museums, there are less and less older men who had a "personal" connection with these historic cars; what "new blood" there is have no connection at all to the vintage equipment we both highly revere.

The late Gerald Brookins, founder of the now-defunct "Trolleyville USA" was indeed a great hero of mine, treated each streetcar and interurban in his " collection"as though they were his own children.

How much I could identify with this rare gentleman.

I'd have felt the same way, had those vintage electrics been in my personal care (he'd had several magnificent wood and steel CA&E cars in his collection, also several operable Shaker Heights center entrance cars, operating MU),........

Trolleyville USA, back in the day, once had the distinction of not only operating four-car MU trains of ex-CA&E cars, but also, two-car trains of ex-Cleveland center entrance cars.

Many years ago, the late Mr. Brookins, upon hearing that open cars were being retired in Vera Cruz, traveled down to arrange purchase of these charming single-truckers, but also, having them transported to the US, where they were lovingly restored to operating condition.

Yje ex-CA&E cars were both wooden and steel.

The late Mr. Brooklns, for so many obvious reasons, is still a great hero of mine; his deep love for the elderly electric cars in his care was so very real, and so very touching.........

Lots of good photos there!

Getting back to Breda, Shaker Heights fleet of them are getting rather aged but still just as ugly as they were from the beginning. I read somewhere that ridership was down on the Shaker lines and it's future may be uncertain. So, maybe no new equipment for the time being even though the new couldn't be much uglier than the old.

Ctberider:

A late friend of mine (RIP), DIE-HARD traction buff and one of the original members of the BSM in Baltimore, HATED those BREDA units on the "Shaker" (he used to refer to them as "mobile homes on rails"!)

Like the Newark City Subway, the "Shaker" lost all of its unique charm, once the vintage PCCs were retured.

Just another light rail line, now.......... Sad

Here we see two ex-CA&E (ex-"Trolleyville") interurbans in Cleveland, back in 2003 (the late Mr. Brookins would indeed be smiling!) Wink
