Contemplating......
IMHO, the "fun" is REALLY going to start, once the actual demolition of the present terminal and its approach ramps begin.......this is all going to be QUITE interesting, to be sure, and it going to be interesting, also, to see how NJT (and other carriers) adjust their schedules accordingly.....also, the new, "temporary" bus loading/unloading areas...........

Further:
Just imagine the impact this PABT demolition/construction will have on local traffic patterns/flow....it sure ain't gonna be no Sunday School picnic, that's for sure!
Seeing how the "tunnel buses" buses are going to be handled will be another interesting "spectator sport", for certain........

Eyewitness News at 11 (Sunday).........
At the end of quick "run through" report on NJT parking lot fees rising significantly in the near term, there was a quick glimpse of an NJT MCI leaving the PABT; in the background, I could see a storage lot where more MCIs were parked.
I guess there is still some bus storage near/under the PABT ramps.........

It would have been interesting.........
To see the relocation of bus lanes, storage areas, etc., had this taken place back in the day when the "Joisey" suburban carriers were still all independent..........

On this day in 1963, the GWB Bus Terminal opens, replacing several "open-air" stations used by suburban buses from New Jersey.
Despite renovations/"upgrades" in more recent years, the terminal's "glory days" are now long gone.........

Hmm. Sounds like the saga of the Midtown "Pea-Yay-Bee-Tee," whose "glory days" ended with the monstrous "renovations" in the late 1970's/early '80's. Once worked in Washington Heights in the mid-'80's, the GWB station's exteriors were almost a carbon copy of the Golden Age-era "Port-of-Authority" "toiminal" when it started. |

Agreed.
DO NOT like the idea of "dollar jitneys" being allowed to access the "Gee-Doubleya-Bee" terminal.......only BUSES (or "BINOs", of you prefer) should be allowed.
Last time I visited that terminal was with my older (late) brother, back in the 1990s; we had walked over the span to Manhattan from Fort Lee, and my brother put Your's Truly in charge of "getting home via bus!".....wonder why?
We were both MORE than happy to "make our escape" from the "toiminal'......far too many "unsavory" characters lurking about (I also remember a number of empty storefronts and boarded-up areas)....could not WAIT to hop on that big "Jersey Hound" (MCI) and hightail it back to good ol' Fort Lee.........

A few months ago, when the temps were still in the 60's/70's, I did a long walk (for exercise), trying to go from Broadway and 207th Street to my home in Midtown, but could only get to 63d and Broadway before taking a bus (I gave it back when finished ). Along the way I passed by the "Gee-Dubyah-Bee" bus station. Didn't notice any "dollar jitneys" around the area, but . . . I was just passing by . . . |

Sounds like you DID gret a BIT of exercise!
There was a report awhile back about "Tijuana Taxi" dollar vans at the GWB terminal'; I know one outfit is "Spanish Transportation", which nabs quite a bit of would-be NJT passengers along Bergenline Avenue, especially.
In my area, these rattletrap vans MORE than outnumber ANY and ALL NJT buses (159/751)
Yeah, a LOT has changed since the GWB "toiminal" opened 63 years back............. |
