Historical note:
On this date in 1954, the first ex-TCRT PCC operated in revenue service on the Newark City Subway; this honor went to car #21.
The very last of the old PS streetcars would be retired the following month; for a brief time, several of the old Compromise-roof cars were stored in the old connector to the lower level of the PS Terminal, in case of emergency, but were all off the property within a few months.........

In North Jersey, only two former PS carhouses/garages still stand.
The WW1-era "WEST NEW YORK" car house, last used by TNJ buses in the ealy 1970s, is today a Department Of Public Works facility, looking much as it during during the PS era.
The other survivor (built early 1900s)) is "MARKET STREET" in Paterson; it closely resembles the now-demolished "UNION CITY" facility.
NJT still uses Market Street, renovating it as a landmark (too bad the Union City building was destroyed a few years ago), as well as rehabbing it to house and service electric buses.
The last streetcars used this facility in 1938, the last ASVs in 1948.
Sadly, not one of the carhouses/garages on the ESSEX Division survive today.......

Further:
The aforementioned Market Street Garage was completed in 1903, and currently houses 150 buses.
During the streetcar era (until 1938) a number of both local and interdivisional car lines were based here.
There were routes that connected to the CENTRAL, BERGEN, HUDSON, and ESSEX Divisions.
This also held true through the ASV and bus eras; many of the lines were discontinued long ago; however, the historic garage is still an integral part of NJT bus operations..........

Here are two more VERY RARE (late 1953) photos of PCCs being delivered to the City Subway......................

The refurbished cars were trucked from PLANK ROAD shops to the abandoned subway-surface ramps of the former "21" (VIA W. MARKET), which was converted to buses in late 1951.
Overhead was still in place at that time, and was still able to be energized.
The PCCs were eased off the flatbeds onto the rails of the former inbound "21" ramp, where, under their own power, they slowly eased down the ramp and into the Subway proper (between the Washington and Warren Street stations), where they ran to the new "hub" at Penn Station...............

Back in 1972, I took a number of photo at the location of the old "21" ramps at Warren Street;.
Rails and overhead were still mostly intact; the outbound portal was blocked by huge piles of junk from an adjacent junkyard; the ramp was very heavily overgrown, especially further in from the street.
The inbound portal across the street was still clearly visible and not blocked.
I returned again in 1988 to take more photos; underbrush was, by this late date, totally in control.
Rails were still pretty much intact, though covered with decades of rubbish and small trees.
Few photos exist of these ramps while they were in use (1935-1951).............

Came across this OUTSTANDING, EXHAUSTIVE historical site, dedicated to the history and operation of the City Subway:

There are also many old newspaper photos, schedules, rare maps, trackplans, and diagrams; also, a number of VERY rare photos showing the subway-surface cars using the connecting ramps at Warren Street ("21 ORANGE"), Norfolk Street ("23 CENTRAL"), and Bloomfield Avenue ("29 BLOOMFIELD")
Also, additional rare photos showing the PCCs being delivered to the Subway at Warren Street in 1953.
There are also rare photos of the Cedar Street Subway and the PS Terminal (one extremely rare photo shows one of the one-man open cars at the lower level of the PS Terminal!)
There are also photos of the ASVs, including one of experimental GM-built "D900"!

Again, you are most welcome!
One can get quite an "in depth education" on the City Subway, from these pages!
In some photos, you can easily see the large electric sign boxes that were suspended from the ceiling at Penn Station (outbound) and Broad Street (outbound)
These sign boxes informed passengers where the cars of the different lines would stop.
Though long disused, these sign boxes remained in place through the 1970s; I was always intrigued by them..........
