Here's a beautiful 1950s view of the CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS station at Colorado Springs; the word word "BUS" was indeed QUITE prominently displayed, as was commonplace with depots of that era!

Note also the particularly handsome ACF-BRILL "IC-41"........

In this long-ago 1930s photo, we see "SUPER COACHES" dominating the loading area at New York (formidable, handsome buses, indeed!) Wink

Here's an excellent page on the former GREYHOUND station in Washington, DC; there are several vintage photos here as well. showing the buses.

This is also a quite interesting article............

You are most welcome; like yourself, I never saw any of those historic pictures before....indeed, the sheer variety of highway caches at the time truly was indeed a feast to the eyes of the bus enthusiasts of the era! Wink

The veteran front-engined coach was indeed the "odd one out", surrounded by modern, rear-engined buses.....the "new order" was indeed in full swing!

(the older-model"Supercoach" would have been the "719", I believe)

One can only imagine how many urban terminals/stations once served the nation's bus travelers, many years ago.

Think of how many no longer exist today (most, obviously, have long since been razed) Sad

That is why saving what remains today of the heyday of intercity bus travel must be preserved for future generations! Wink

That's a problem all too common with transportation photographer's...they only seem to want to capture the classic 'three quarter view' of the bus, train, plane, etc., and not much else. Rarely the interiors, or rear end. And even rarer, the varied depots, garages, rest stops, etc.

*NOTE:

IMHO, the photo caption is incorrect; I believe the bus shown is a YELLOW; also, the photo date given would be off (1931)----the YELLOW Z "Streamliners" would have dated to c. 1934.......

Well GM held a partial ownership of Yellow at the time, and later all of it.
That's a great shot of the old, old Greyhound Terminal when it was in the Union Market.

Another one of those "drive thru" type terminals, typical of Continental in the West.

Another beauty. Very reminiscent of the one in Cleveland.
I am glad that is was partially saved, if only to repurpose it.

traildriver:

As always, greatly appreciate your comments and always-informative input! Wink

When you think of how the original "Port-of-Authority"was designed, it was clear that a "loop" facility would have to be built, to enable the steady flow of commuter buses from New Jersey to make quick turnarounds, after discharging their passengers, thus allowing them to easily pull into their respective platforms.

Then,of course, you had the unique Hotel Dixie underground, terminal, with its also-unique turntable...........

Here is an interesting, in-depth article on the "Port-of-Authority"; note 1930s photo of the Art Deco GREYHOUND terminal across from the old Pennsylvania Station........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Authority_Bus_Terminal

As the photo caption notes, GREYHOUND had the distinction of being the last company to move into the PABT.

I ofte like to imagine GREYHOUND using the old station into the 1970s, and perhaps, into the 1980s.

I would also imagine that "The Hound" eventually turned a nice little profit, after selling the property where the old station was situated.

I do recall this once-busy facility laying dormant for some time before finally being demolished; the area where the old GREYHOUND terminal once stood, like the site of the old (foolishly destroyed) Penn Station, is totally unrecognizable today...........

Mention should also be made here of the old Dixie Terminal in Cincinnati, which is no longer in transit use.

Like the PABT (and, also, the long-ago demolished Public Service Terminal in Newark) the Dixie Terminal was also a "loop" facility with elevated approaches; recall, also, that the PS Terminal also utilized elevated roadways/approach ramps.

Also, like the PS Terminal, Dixie also, at one time, served streetcars and trolleybuses..........

Though the buses and streetcars that served this historic and totally majestic building are now long, long gone, the Dixie Terminal still stands proudly, a stunning tribute to the highly-skilled and gifted craftsmen over a century ago............
