Here are several views of the huge elevated PSNJ trolley terminal at Hoboken: ALWAYS a VERY busy facility, especially at rush hours; my folks and older brothers all well remembered this long-gone station!
There were also turnstiles, change booths, a heated waiting room, and concessions here; the cars themselves used a loop under the shed to reverse.......
https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?116245 (the elevated station was nearing completion when this rare photo was taken; the construction company sheds mark the location of where H&M entrance kiosks would later be located)
https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?145624 (looking east, circa-1948)
https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?116243 (this circa-1911 view depicts a "1700"-series car inside the terminal shed; the "1700s" lasted into the mid-1930s. The car seen here is signed "UNION HILL", after 1925, the signs would read "UNION CITY" (my hometown!), when Union Hill merged with West Hoboken)
https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?116244 (here, in 1938, we see a "2400" series deck roof car, painted in the "De Luxe" scheme of the late 1920s-----the car is signed for "SUMMIT"; this line ran on Summit Avenue, right up the block from the old apartment house I later grew up in!)
The "2400s" ran on the HUDSON Division until the lines were converted to buses in 1949.........

Indeed!
Today, it's come "full circle"; the circa-1950 shed that covered the bus lanes (which retained "PUBLIC SERVICE" lettering until several years ago) has recently been torn down, to be replaced with a new facility.
Aside from some streetcar tracks (last used in the 1930s) embedded in the cobblestones nearby) there is, sadly, nothing left of the PS era in Hoboken.
How many years I waited in line for a bus under that ancient shed (still lit by incandescent bulbs!) over the course of many years............

| Nice collection of buses! I'd ride any of them because I want to, not because I have to like now. |

Speaking of the old Hoboken bus terminal.........
Through the 1960s (and until we moved to West Orange in 1971) Mom and I would go up the block to Summit Avenue, and catch a PSNJ #17 to the Hoboken Terminal (only a 15-minute rode!) when we were going to train watch, explore the terminal, or to take the train for on of our "excursions" on the Erie-Lackawanna
The "17" (which replaced "SUMMIT" streetcars in 1949, like its fellow "stepchild" route, the "16") never had Fishbowls; they used 4509s right up until the end.
The "16" was cut back to Journal Square (from its 32nd St (Union City). terminal about 1970, before it was totally eliminated.
Mom and I also ised this line fairly often, throgh the years.
The "17" was taken off sometime in the early 1970s, after my family had moved; neither line had an "alternate" replacement.........

Some interesting historic photos in this "in depth" article.........

(note rare "last day" photo of two Cincinnati streetcars trailed by a new trolleybus; recall, this city utilized the only "double pole" system in North America)

Here is a link to several photo galleries on Cincinnati's unique "double pole" streetcar system.
Today, the city has loght rail (translation: "Le Escargot Elctrique"(!!)
The old pre-PCC streetcars were particularly handsome; the PCCs, of course, were timeless..............

| They should have set up their new LRV system utilizing two trolley poles to maintain continuity with their past! Of course, the LRV's are as ugly as sin. |

Cyberider:
Agreed!
The old classic streetcars of Cincinnati were STREETCARS, and LOOKED it; they did NOT look like giant, mutates INSECTS or SERPENTS!!!!!!!!!!
In the October, 1963 issue of "Reader's Digest", there was an excellent little short story (with a GREAT "lead-in" picture!) entitled:
"DO NOT TALK TO THE MOTORMAN WHEN THE STREETCAR IS IN MOTION"
The story is about two boys (one a VERY avid streetcar fan!) who, back on a lazy Sunday in Cincinatti (in the 1930s) venture into a neighborhood carbarn, and "hijack" a "34" trolley for a VERY short joyride!"
I have to see if I can get another issue for this story; Mom first read it to me when I was 6!
The story was even more fun to read as an adult!
The illustration showed a orange, deck roof, double-pole car, signed for the "34", with the two young buddies playing "motorman" and "conductor"!
Wanted to share this one with you.........
