(SEE PREVIOUS PHOTO/COMMENTS)

Built by BRILL in 1922, the second generation of (prewar) Market-Frankford cars featured "turtleback" roofs, but otherwise resembled cars then running in New York and Boston.........

Though lacking the large bulkhead signboxes typical of New York's rapid transit fleet, the 1960 "Almond Joys" did bear some resemblence to the cars then running there.........

Compare the IRT "Lo-V" to this early "Market-Frankford" car......

Interesting historical "Liberty Bell Limited" trivia..........

Prior to the scrapping of all but car #1030 in 1951, the motors and third rail components of five of the "1000"-series cars were removed, and sold to the P&W for use under their "Bullet" cars......

As in any other operation, it's sad that the old equipment and ways are gone but at least something remains of some of it. What remains still has an interurbanish character running through the beautiful countryside. Certainly no worse than the Blue Line replacement for the PE Long Beach line in my opinion. I suppose they are both better than nothing.

The early Market-Frankford equipment was pretty rugged looking. Nice!

Cyberider:

This can also be said of today's SEPTA Route #100 "Norristown High Speed Line"; the line's cars are now roughly 35 years old, and seem to be at least somewhat inspired by the iconic "Bullets" of old

And, at least, unlike the original (long ago razed) Norristown terminal, the handsome, historic 69th Street station is still in use today, still an important intermodal transfer point..........

Here are two modern-day views of the interior of the 69th Street terminal; at least, the original structure remains.

Back in 1982, I can still remember glimpsing a few old "P&W" signs that were then still intact, at this station............

Cyberider:

Here's an excellent, "in depth" page (with historic and modern-day photos) on the 69th Street Terminal.

Mote the magnificent "Main Hall", dating back to 1907.

This is an interesting, very detailed page.........

One look at these nostalgic photos (taken at 69th Street terminal) will tell you why Philadelphia was indeed a Mecca for traction fans, even into the 1980s! Wink

Indeed, the operations out of 69th Street once constituted a true "museum operation"! Wink

Enjoy! Very Happy

Back in the pre-internet days when books were all I had, I was enamored by all of the equipment coming in to and out of the 69th St. Terminal but had never seen inside. Thanks, NYO.

Cyberider:

You're welcome, as always!

Many years ago, in the pre-internet era, I was kept informed (traction/rapid transit-wise) mostly by Vane Jones "TRACTION & MODELS" and Stephen McGuire's "TRANSIT TOPICS", in the old "RAILROAD" magazine (STILL wonder WHY I never joined the ERA, back in the day!) Rolling Eyes

Traction books, also, fired up my interest and knowledge further still.

Three old spiral books I have had for years in my traction library are well-worg having:

"THE LIBERTY BELL ROUTE'S 1000-SERIES INTERURBAN CARS: HISTORY AND ROSTER" (NRHS, 1964)

"SHORT TROLLEY ROUTES IN THE LEHIGH RIVER VALLEY" (NRHS, 1967)

"YORK COUNTRY TROLLEYS" (Benson W. Rohrbeck, 1978)

All three books feature many rare and interesting photos, rosters, maps, etc)

GREAT little books, if you are lucky enough to find them for sale (check out the 'net!)! Wink

Here's another excellent little softcover, packed with photos, maps, trackplans, etc.:

""LOST TROLLEYS OF QUEENS AND LONG ISLAND" ("Images Of Rail" series, Stephen Meyers)

Quite a few rare BIRNEY photos in this book; also, a fewvery rare photos of leased TARS cars modified for ending their days on the Queensboro Bridge Railway.

Some very obscure operations are documented here.....

TARS cars on the QBRy...........

After STEINWAY converted its streetcar lines to buses in the late 1930s, its section over the Queensboro Bridge was sold to the QBRy, which intended to use ex-STEINWAY rolling stock,

However, the City of New York decided that the ancient cars had to be updated for bridge service; while these cars were being revamped, TARS leased a group of some of its newest cars to the QBRy as temporary replacements.

These cars were now equipped with four motors per car instead of two, and red safety lights were installed under the headlights...........

Photos of leased TARS cars running on the QBRy are not all that common; here are two which I managed to find........
