Just "hoid" on 1010 WINS that, by 2028, the "Pee-Yay" wants to hike PATH ("da tubes") fares to FOUR DOLLARS!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Man, if I were still working downtown, I'be be working just to cover mt COMMUTATION costs!!!!! Shocked Shocked

And, to think, the fare was THIRTY CENTS in 1979, whem I started "woikin'" down on "da Street". Shocked

Like the "Pee-Yay" so cash-starved and financially ailing........... Evil or Very Mad

Wonder if the fare hike is supposed to cover the costs of building the new "PABT" . . .

But last I was on PATH, earlier this year, they still took MetroCards. With those being retired by the "Em-Tee-Yay" at year's end (talk about social engineering running amok), will PATH stop taking them as well?

Sounds to me like once that's fully implemented, I shall ride PATH no longer.

W.B.:

If it comes down to you "riding PATH no longer", then, you sure ain't missing much. my friend. Sad

With RFWs and block signals now history, "da tubes" that Your's Truly was once so enamored with for decades, is but a mere, insipid shadow of what it once was.

I last rode over 20 years ago, when the first phase of the new WTC station opened........nah, it just ain't the same...... Razz

Also........

Saw a brief "run through" report on Eyewitness News earlier, that announced that, for a brief period, the MTA is giving away free "OMNY" cards at several subway stations.

I know that Coney Island (Stilwell Avenue) is among these stations........

"METROCARDS", "OMNY", etc................

Now......let's see how long it will be before the "Em-Tee-Yat" deems the "OMNY" system outmoded. Rolling Eyes

Personally, token s should never have been relegated to history. Sad

PATH did away with tokens after the opening of the (original) WTC terminal, switching to exact-fare turnstiles (30 cents, back then)

Last operation in "Noo Yawk" to use tokens was the Roosevelt Island Tram......

MetroCards had a pretty long life, considering. Not as long as the tokens, but still . . . yeah, you have to wonder when the "Em-Tee-Yay" will "toin" on OMNY the way they had with the others.

W.B.:

Your's truly used tokens until they were totally phased out; I was, indeed, a die-hard traditionalist. Wink

When commuting on "da tubes", I used the PATH fare cards until the last day I used mine, on that fateful morning on 9/11. Sad

I still have it, "enshrined" in the small "flip case" I always carried my PATH cards in, way back in the day.

These cards were purchased at newsstands in the PATH system; "fare booths" were, by that time, long, long gone...........

Interesting........

Just "hoid" on 1010 WINS that PATH "soivice" between Hoboken and the WTC, and Hoboken and 33rd Street are experiencing delays due to "signal issues" at Hoboken. Sad

Well, PATH, of course, saw fit to scrap the ol' tried-and-true McAdoo-era block signals some while back, in favor of that newfangled "ATC", which would be of much better use on a Disney Park monorail system............ Razz

Surprise, surprise! Next we're gonna hear that there are going to be more "tweakings" to that system like what shut down Hoboken twice over this year. Rolling Eyes

And all because PATH saw fit to wholesale jettison the "tried and true" in favor of the "shiny and new" (talking about throwing out the baby along with the bath water). Sheeesh! (as Ed Norton on The Honeymooners would say). One wonders what Hoboken native Frank Sinatra would've thought of all this . . . I was last to Hoboken a couple years ago when there was still a Blimpie's a few blocks away (it is now even farther from the "toiminal").

W.B.:

Many, many years ago (1970s) the husband of a niece of my dad's was the manager of that "Blimpies" , up on Washington Street (Old Looks and Fishbowls then still plied that 14-block thoroughfare!) Wink

PATH, as we know, sadly cares little about the rich heritage from the McAdoo days; aside from the ("PRESSED STEEL") kiosks at Hoboken, and the restored "HUDSON TUNNELS" entrance canopy at the Christopher Street station, there is virtually no reminders of the "Aitch & Em" era Sad.

PATH, today, is but just another way to get from "A" to "B", a far cry from the colorful, fascinating, historic system which Your's Truly was so enamored with, for so many years, a long, long time ago............

UPDATE.....

1010 WINS is now reporting delays due to "switch issues" at Hoboken; recall, not long ago, all the switches and terminal trackage at Hoboken was replaced, in a sadly shoddy and inept "renovation" project, that also included the station area.......... Razz

And apparently, such issues were never resolved, if they still have such problems.

I wonder where in Hoboken would an "Aitch & Em" store be. I've learnt that the retail clothing chain adopted those initials (from Hennes & Mauritz) six years after the "Pea-Yay" acquired the Hudson & Manhattan and renamed it PATH.

W.B.:

IF there were an "Aitch & Em" clothing store in Hoboken, a most appropriate location would have been the old brick building that once held the (now-defunct) H&M/PATH flat car elevator, fed by a short spur off of Track #3 at the Hoboken (PATH) station........ Rolling Eyes

Here are two views of the same cast-iron H&M kiosk at Hoboken, taken several decades apart.

Note, in the 1972 photo, the original 1962 "PATH" sign; interesting that at least some 4509s were still running for PS/TNJ.....look closely, the other bus, still sporting the same later PS scheme scheme, has now been sold for operation on Washington Street (left background)

The iconic PS bus shed seen here was sadly demolished not long ago; Your's Truly waited under that drafty shed for my homebound #21/#181/"BOULEVARD EAST" bus for many a year, back in the day..........
