Historical trivia.........

In 1957, a set of the iconic "Q" cars had a one-day "stint" on the "Frankie", running in test service to see if they would be suitable for service on the shuttle.

As this test only lasted for one day, and was never repeated, the outcome speaks for itself............

Interesting note........

Though in their twilight years, the "Arnines" found themselves operating on "Bee-Em-Tee" rails, but, oddly enough (AFAIK) they were never even tested on the "Frankie". (then again, neither were the "Artens",

If, indeed, the "R-211s" (in classic Brooklyn-era, would we refer to these new trains as "Bensonhoist Bullets"?) are coming to the "Frankie", it will be interesting to see if these trains will be open-gangway units, or "conventionals".

Also interesting, that, many years ago, the "Frankie" became sort of a "repository" for a few of the BMT's eclectic collection of "oddbals" (i.e p

For now, the now-classic "Brighton Belles" ("R-68s") are still in charge of the "Frankie" *these cars will have the distinction of being the last cars on this line equipped with roller curtains)............

I can vouch for that; I finally did my "soivey" of the "Bee-Em-Tee" situation, and besides the "Frankie" still holding on to the "Brighton Belles," there are these others ("Eye-En-Dee" routes also included):

- B: R-68, R-68A, R-211 (conventional, no gangways)
- D: R-68
- F: R-160
- M: R-160
- N: R-46
- Q: R-46, R-68, R-68A, R-160
- R: R-160
- W: R-46

This is not necessarily a complete list, but those are what I saw run on those routes this late morning/early afternoon. Going down, I went on the Broadway line, traveling through the "Manny B" over the south tracks that feed to same; coming back I went on the B (but not, alas, an R-211), travelling over the "Manny B" north tracks feeding to the Sixth Avenue line.

W.B.:

GREATLY appreciate this info; as I have not been on the subways (or even in the city) since I retired in 2004, I pretty much have to rely on "online sources" to see just what the current picture is, regarding the subways......THANK YOU! Wink

I see that rhe "F", "M", and "R" are now 100% NTT.

Last time I was on the "F", it was aboard a "Slant 40"!! Shocked

Last time I was on the "M", it was on board either a "R-40M" or an "R-42"!Shocked

Last time I rode the "R" it was STILL the "Double Are"! Shocked

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that Your's Truly has not been "ridin' the rails" for quite a lengthy spell! Wink

From your detailed report, I can see that the "Brighton Belles" are still holding their own (at least for now)

The veteran "Fordy-Sixes" are, indeed, in their twilight.

Curious, now....what line(s) are operating the open-gangway "R-211s" ? (the "A"?)

From what I see, the R-211's that the A used as I saw today were not the "open gangway" types. I seemed to read they were all assigned to the G line.

W.B.:

Thanks; I had forgotten about their going into "soivice" on the "Gee" line.

What's running on the "C" these days; is the "C" now all "NTT"?

For years, it seemed the oldest equipment was assigned to the "CC"/"C"; Your's Truly clearly recalls the "Thunderboids" ("R-10s"), "R-27"/'R-30s", and "Brightliner" R-32s.

There WAS that brief swap in the very early 1980s (which Your's Truly clearly remembers), where the "44s"/"46s" were switched from the "E" over to the "CC", and the "Artens" going over to the "E".

Later on, of course, I got to like the "44s"/"46s", but, IMHO, they lost a lot of their character after the GOH robbed them of their blue stripes.

I also remember the "27s"/"30s" serving on the "C": for but a few years, before they were replaced by the ""R-32s"; IMHO, they were retired far too early.

Now....I wonder if the "Frankie" will eventually be all "Bensonhoist Bullets", OR, will the "R-221s" displace "Brontos" from another line, and then send them over to the "Frankie".............

Apparently, based on a YouTube video put up a day ago, the R-68A's are also on the N line. May have to do another "ex-coision" to see if they're on the W as well.

The C's, from what I could tell, currently use R-179 and R-211 cars.

W.B.:

Appreciate the additional info.

Hard to believe that the "C", once a line which operated some of the oldest in the system, is now a line where ALL "high tech" rules.

Talk about a 360! Shocked

Last time I rode the "N" was on a bright, chilly day in March of 1993 (rode through to Coney Island); had the RFW of a "Brightliner" all to myself, the entire trip to Stillwell Avenue! Wink

Ahhh, indeed, those were the days......... Wink

Two possible scenarios for the "Frankie"..........

1:

The "Brighton Belle" R-68s will be replaced directly with "R-211s" ("Bensonhoist Bullets")

2:

"Brontos" will be re-assigned to the "Frankie" when the "R-68s" are retired, themselves being replaced by the "R-211s" on another line(s)..........

"Toins" out the G is the line with the "open gangway" cars (R-211T's), the remaining subway lines that use the new cars are R-211A's. (The 211S's are the "Staten Island Rattlers.")

Including, up to the prior year, the R-46's.

Oh, and yet another example of the difference between the buses of old and today's "BINO's" . . .

To paraphrase Tweety Bird . . .

"You know . . . we wose more buses dat way!"
