W.B.:
Thanks for the info; much appreciated, as always.
100 buses SOUNDS like a LOT, BUT, when you figure how many hundreds were once to be found in all five boroughs, well. it sure doesn't seem like all that much (still, they lasted far longer than those rostered by "En-Jay-Tee", (including the second-hand RTS [ex-MTA] which I well recall years ago on ACADEMY's "22").........

I forgot another "tony Manhattan" route the "Are-Tee-Ess" plied towards the end: the M42 bus crisscrossing 42d Street. That makes at least two. |

I WELL recall all the "politically correct" nonsense then going on, accusing the MTA of assigning its oldest buses to the poorest areas.
I shudder to think what these complaints would have been like, had these people lived during the last few years of "Soiface".........

At least, in spite of all the 1960 FACL and ST "Jetsons" corralled together at Kingsbridge depot and running many Bronx routes in their last years, there wasn't that hubbub when they were all retired in '73. |

Indeed, indeed.
Even some "Tee-Yay" "Kramdens," towards the end of their run, plied the M-15 - First and Second Avenues route. |

So much for only "old" buses being assigned to routes in the "poorer" neighborhoods.......

This MIGHT have been touched upon earlier, here.........
When the faithful RTS made their last runs, what exacyly replaced these iconic buses?
"MCBs" ("Milk Carton BINO")?
"Slinkies"?
Doesn't really matter, I guess.....the last truly classic "Noo Yawk" buses have now disappeared forvever down the echoing corridors of time.......

I was going to say, all of the above . . .
But today, I saw one "BINO" pass, on the Q32 bus to Penn Station. At some points the electronic front sign malfunctioned and I saw this:
FA32 PENN STATION
Q3RE REQUIRED
Almost but not quite like the "JOURNAOURNA" you once saw back in "Joisey," no? |

CANNOT believe you STILL recall that classic "1JOURNAJOURNA" reading on that NHBL (ex-MTA) "Bomber" Your's Truly rode on, so many times, waaaay back in the dsy!
Funny, but not long ago i saw one of NJT's "Slinkies" running inbound to the "Port-of-Authority" on the "159R"]; bus was waiting for the light to change, and I was able to catch this unorthodox reading:
["159NEWRRESS"]
Yet another exotic "destination", indeed!

Trivia.........
Unlike their early Queens counterparts, the earliest MTA "Torpedos" never had roller curtains.
Of course, the "slant back" buses that ran in Queens were also the earliest in production, back when new buses could still be equipped with roller curtains.........

Yep, starting with the Grumman "Borough Bombers," the "Em-Tee-Yay" went whole-hog with electronic signs on buses and never looked back. And hindsight shows that they were right to wait until the "Are-Tee-Ess' " had their backs straightened, so there were no "Quasimodos" in their bus fleet - and given how much they ordered over a nearly 20-year span. |

W.B.:
I well remember in the mid-90s when ACADEMY replaced the HUGE FONT roller curtains on their Metro "B's" with "elek-tron-icks"; NONE of the drivers I knew were the LEAST enamored with the new setup, as they now had to punch out codes on a keypad to set the signs, instead of merely flipping a switch. as was done previously.
Many, many, early mornings at Nungessers (before any other passengers arrived for the 'Boulevard East" run to Hoboken) the driver would keep on hitting the keys until Your's Truly (stationed outside!) gave him the "OK" that he had the correct reading displayed!
Just couldn't leave well enough alone.......
