From lightship to "Texas Tower" and beyond, the Ambrose Light Station has guided untold thousands....perhaps millions......of vessels entering and leaving New York Harbor, including, of course, cruise ships and liners.....

See the following links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_ship
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/list_of_longest_ships
I posted these two links, as, last evening, I was contemplating the monstrous sizes of today's cruise ships and container ships; a question then made itself known in my head:
"Can these ships possibly getting bigger?"
Just the thought of the thousands of gallons of (costly!) fuel consumed by these monolithic vessels staggers the mind.
Too, think of present docking facilities (passenger docks/container ports); will they day arrive when they, themselves, can no longer expand?
It is quite interesting to ponder these thoughts......

Several good points in that…
But those ships all have to pass seaworthy trials when new, before their classification society like Lloyd’s will certify them.
In any case, I am completely confident in them… |

traildriver:
Your comment made me recall a memorable line in 1960's ship-disaster flick, "THE LAST VOYAGE", delivered by the "skipper" (George Saunders) to one of his men, when the doomed "S.S. CLARIDON" was about to sink:
"The men who designed this ship weren't idiots, Mr. Walsh!"
(that line always sticks with me!)
Indeed, it MUST be QUITE interesting, to say the least, to see a new cruise ship undergoing seaworthy trials; to say such testing mut be INTENSE, I feel, is indeed a tremendous understatement!

.....sadly (but not at all surprising) the CDC is warning all people (even those fully vaccinated) to STAY CLEAR of cruise ships, due to (another) surge in COVID infections.
HOLLAND-AMERICA got hit quite hard, I understand.
Just when, after nearly two dark, dismal years, we thought that things were FINALLY returning to normal, we get hit AGAIN.
This time around, IMHO, I think the cruise ship companies are going to get clobbered even harder than during the first COVID outbreaks, nearly two years ago.
Right now, it is anyone's guess as to how the cruise ship industry will weather this latest storm, and, when (if ever) will it return to anything near "normal".......

.......at the moment I am typing thee words, it is anyone's guess as to how the already-battered, crippled cruise ship companies are going to fare in 2022.............

Today on 1010 WINS, I heard that cruise ship line stocks are going up (believe it or not!) as the companies are experiencing an upsurge of bookings for later this year (hopefully, things WILL improve by then)
The storm-tossed, bruised and battered cruise ship companies certainly need to finally see a bright, rising sun on the dark horizon.....

On EYEWITNESS NEWS (ABC-7) yesterday, I heard that cruise ship companies will be exempt from CDC guidelines.
Let's hope that, by some miracle, the cruise ship lines will FINALLY begin to make a long-overdue comeback in 2022.
I do not know where the footage was taken, but there were some very impressive shots of a number of docked cruise ships, moored at the same location.
Even at dockside, these massive ships are impressive....
