|
|
All:
Was watching Eyewitness News at 11 (ABC 7) earlier; one report showed a line of articulated buses (the reporter called then "accordion buses") pulled over, one behind the other.
The reporter said it looked more like a bus depot than a city street.
He also mentioned that, because the buses did not have chains put on, the vehicles simply could not get enough traction on the slippery streets.
NOT a good rush hour for bus and rail commuters; motorists, also, faced many nightmares.
The PABT was jammed with the thousands of stranded commuters; the second and third levels were closed as they were becoming far too crowded for safety's sake.
Any buses crossing the GWB also faced massive delays and lane closures; you can bet your bottom dollar that I was MORE than ecstatic that I retired 15 years ago, and no longer have to commute into the city daily.
My sympathies were indeed with the many thousands stranded by this nasty storm.

BTW:
Stay tuned for selected vintage "Snow Bus" photos........

In short, the "artic' " buses were sidelined by an Arctic blast.

So.....I would guess that the MTA's "artic" buses were not "artic proofed" enough??
No need for "ARTIC-COOLER"-equipped buses this time of year.......

I'm not keen on the new buses and I really don't care for the artics so a line of buses in the snow should be a line of real buses...
Here is a view I posted before featuring a line of new looks, with bat-wings and air conditioning stranded during the February 1967 snow storn along 42nd Street and 3rd Avenue.
The a/c condenser on 8447 has a sheet metal covering the grill.
The photo original appeared in the New York Daily News.
Stay warm!

MaBSTOA 15:
Like yourself, I'm also not really into either the new models or the artics (except, of course, for the VINTAGE artics we've seen in photos, here and elsewhere!)
Thanks, also, for posting that great old newspaper photo; when the Fishbowls couldn't "slug it out" in the snow, it HAD to be a blockbuster storm, indeed, for those tanks not to get through!
Cannot believe that I have not ridden on (or even seen) A Fishbowl in 20 years, here in Jersey..........

As the snowy remains of Thursday's nasty one-two-punch storm are rapidly melting away, here is a vintage photo of a REAL bus awaiting its next run, in the company of the last snowfall's grimy remnants......

A light coating of "Joisey" snow dusts this NHBL Fishbowl, patiently awaiting its next run.
Also, note the hulk of the ex-PSNJ Old Look in the background......

Edgecombe & 155th St., 1983.
One thing in the city NEVER changes; during the dreary winter months (especially after it snows) the buses are always clad in a sooty, grimy coat that practically shouts "IT'S WINTER IN NOO YAWK"!!
