This is the one and only Mack CD bus model of 1940. This was a king size bus perhaps built by Mack to compete with Yellow's TD-5501 (eventually becoming the TD-5401, #2500 of Fifth Avenue Coach).
It appears that the Mack was painted in the Surface Transportation System color scheme used by Surface during that period.
Does anyone know if this bus was a demo for Surface?; and what became of it?
According to the book MACK BUSES, 1900-1960 Photo Archive by Harvey Eckart this bus was sold in 1941 for $12,400!

The unique side destination box is another giveaway that this bus was destined for the New York area.
It's too bad that Mack didn't put this model into production. It may have had a good chance of being a success.

Back in the day, the NYC area was very fertile ground for Mack bus sales.
Here's what John Montville had to say (Mack: A Living Legend of the Highway, page 106):
"Mack bus sales during 1937 reached nearly 1000 and by 1939 there were over 800 Mack buses in operation in the New York Territory alone. The New York World's Fair of 1939-1940 was the spur to many local bus operators to add new vehicles to their fleets in anticipation of the huge crowds which would soon be descending upon the fair grounds.
The Mack Diesel bus was introduced in the fall of 1938 with the first two CT-4D diesel-electric units going to Boston in November. Over 200 CM-4D 41-passenger models were ordered by New York's Third Avenue Transit System between 1939 and 1941."
Many NYC bus fleets had Mack buses on their rosters: only NYCO, Triboro and Queens-Nassau Transit seemed to have stayed Mack-free during this era.
