A BYD battery electric bus visited Connecticut DOT in Newington today. The bus uses Iron-Phosphate batteries to power a pair of in wheel traction motors, with an average range of 155+ miles between charges. BYD is building the buses in Lancaster, CA to comply with "Buy American" requirements. More information about the bus can be found at the company's website: http://www.byd.com/na/auto/ElectricBus.html

They bid on our electric bus procurement, but lost it because they could not (or would not) give the origin of suppliers, weren't sure if the buses would actually be built in Lancaster or in China somewhere, had not been Altoona tested successfully and a domestic parts supply was not specified.
This is new technology. The BYD demo here in Louisville was a hoot to drive and would be useable on many of our routes due to the range between charges. Plus - a necessity in the Ohio Valley - the a/c was powerful and quiet. I got to drive the demo and was impressed. But I could not recommend purchase of their vehicle yet. We ended up getting the Proterra product. So far the first delivery has been sent back to the factory!
