According to TT notes, the "GOLDEN CHARIOT" made two round trips daily, between NYC and Philadelphia; majority of runs were held down by the SCENICRUISER and HIGHWAY TRAVELER.....

Other interesting footnotes:

Symbols indicate that certain runs operate via S.R.26, while others operate via S.R. 27.

Certain designated runs were interstate only.

NYO...congratulations on acquiring that gem. Timetable collecting is one of my favorite hobbies. You can learn a wealth of historic information from them.

Between NYC and Philly back in '55, GL also competed with Continental Trailways (American Buslines), Safeway Trailways, and Quaker City Bus Company. Not to mention, the PRR. And there were other carriers over that route, alternates to it, and various carriers over portions of it, hence the traffic restrictions which could get very complicated.

You could take a roundabout route all the way on Public Service. Or you could take a combination of Suburban Transit, and Trenton-Philadelphia Coach Co. There was L&W Transportation which ran a one-a-day run from NYC to North Philly. This later became Colonial Coach a Short Line (HTL) subsidiary.
In later years Red Arrow Lines purchased Bridgeton Transit and started a new NYC-Philly route. This later evolved into Garden State Coachways.

There were many others going way back.

The 'Golden Chariot', the GM PD4901 experimental, came in handy at times with its 47 seat capacity.

traildriver:

Many thanks for posting this cool info!

Yes, indeed...those were the GOLDEN DAYS of bus travel!

Where'd it all go?

Your most interesting post reminded me of a great article in the May/June issue of "ELECTRICLINES" magazine:

"NEW YORK TO WASHINGTON BY TROLLEY".

Although this grand tour was only possible between 1915 and 1920, it covered some 350 miles, and involved changing between 23 electric cars (of 18 different companies!), AND two steam railroads!

Certainly NOT a trip for those in a hurry!

Getting back to Greyhound, I have several more 1950s/60s GREYHOUND TT's arriving shortly (eBay purchases), that I will be glad to relate to here!

Providence Arrow Line became Super Service Coach Company, which was later purchased by Short Line of Rhode Island, and then they bacame Bonanza Bus Lines. It in turn was purchased by Coach USA for a short span and then sold to Peter Pan, as it lives on today as a Peter Pan subsidiary.

Vermont Transit was purchased by Greyhound, and recently was fully merged into Greyhound ending its identity, although there are still some VT liveried buses in the fleet.

SMT (Eastern) Limited was merged with Acadian Lines. and later with Orleans Express.

All of the above are sadly running a mere shadow of what they once ran in their heyday, as far as routes and schedules....

traildriver:

Thanks!

Always appreciate this great historical info!

I have one VERMONT TRANSIT schedule in my collection at present; this one dates to Feb-April 1979.

Though there's a photo of a modern MCI on the cover, the graphics of a skiing couple look quite dated (but indeed charming); they look as though they date to the early-mid 60's.

Services listed:

MONTREAL-BURLINGTON-ALBANY-NEW YORK

MONTREAL-BURLINGTON-WHITE RIVER JCT.-BOSTON

MONTREAL-BURLINGTON-RUTLAND-BOSTON

BURLINGTON-PITTSFIELD-NEW YORK

QUEBEC CITY-SHERBROOKE-HARTFORD-NEW YORK-BOSTON

MOTREAL-BURLINGTON-RUTLAND-MONTPELIER-ST.JOHNSBURY-PORTLAND

NEWPORT-STOWE-BURLINGTON--SHERBROOKE-ALBANY-NEW YORK

FAIR HAVEN-RUTLAND-WHITE RIVER JCT.-GLENS FALLS-CONCORD-MANCHESTER-LOWELL-BOSTON

Lengthy footnotes of designations for thru buses.......

Those were the days when Greyhound Lines had an outstanding traffic and schedule department that took great pains to provide meticulously accurate information and diseminate them to all concerned well in advance of planned schedule changes.
Sadly, that too has passed. Nowadays, it is all electronic. There is a "System Timetable" book, derived from GL's portion of the Russell's Official Bus Guide, but they come out infrequently, and seem to be in shorter and shorter supply.
The various numbered folders that GL used to issue to the public, containing numbered tables, some condensed through routes, and some detailed local routes, were also published by Russell's for GL (and most other intercity carriers as well).

I enjoy reading the detailed traffic restrictions. One in particular partially sticks in my memory. It was about no passengers may be carried locally between (certain nearby points, which I have forgotten), and Philadelphia unless passengers had a "prior or subsequent commitment to transfer to the trains of The Pennsylvania Railroad Company".

Yes, that's familiar. It hints at an I C C mandated "key point" restriction controlling Interstate travel. The principle
triggered a great number of issues with rail TOFC movements, too.

Else, the restriction also hints GREYHOUND did not hold PENNA P U C Intrastate authority over routings in question.

Another that I recall was at the opposite corner of the country telling of GL not being able to carry between certain points and Redlands, except in accordance with the "General Southern California Restriction", whatever that ominous sounding thing was....

Hmmmm... We would have to possess the Ancient Scrolls, the Lost Book of Regulation. The "Restriction" may have originated with
I C C (Interstate travel), or CAL P U C (Intrastate), or both.

Ages back, the regulators with much enthusiasm to, much like the child's fable, "Bell The Cat" of the perceived monster, ESPEE RR.
A related case in point? The ICC ORDER in the ESPEE - CONTROL - SSW Case. It contained protections for the ROCK ISLAND RR.

ESPEE found clever ways to circumvent it, of course. I saw it in action, decades after original I C C Decision. It was a perfectly legal
strategy in control of empty cars for shipper loading...
