All......
Earlier today I was indeed fortunate to come across a wonderful collection of old PSNJ streetcar photos; several also showing vintage PSNJ buses as well.
These photos were taken amidst my old "stomping grounds", so these old areas are more than familiar to me.
Enjoy the nostalgia!

Sip Avenue, Jersey City, approaching bustling Journal Square, 1949.
This photo was taken just before the last Hudson County streetcars were replaced by new PSNJ buses.
The bus you see facing you is about to turn off Sip Avenue, and into the sheds of PSNJ's off-street Journal Square terminal.
Also, note other bus heading eastwards on Sip.
The PSNJ terminal, which I remember very well, was closed in 1974, when the new PATH Transportation Center opened.
The old terminal was used as a parking lot for many years, but, sadly, was demolished several years ago.
The adjoining concourse with its many shops and entrance to the H&M (PATH) Tubes, likewise, no longer exists.....

Looking down at the long-gone NYC (WEST SHORE) railroad/ferry terminal at Weehawken; until 1959, ferryboats crossed the Hudson to both W.42nd St. and Cortlandt St.
Closed in 1959, the massive terminal burned down in a spectacular fire in 1962 (I was quite young at the time, but still remember this clearly).
Until 1947, PSNJ ASV's (dual-powered trolley buses) called here, as well as the motor buses and streetcars.
The UNION CITY and SUMMIT lines were replaced by buses in August of 1949.
Note PS coach at the main terminal entrance; obviously, this photo was taken during a non-rush hour.
Nothing in this photo remains; today, the massive parking lot for the NY WATERWAY ferries and terminal area, occupy this site.....

Palisades Junction (Cliffside Park/Fort Lee border), 1937.
In the heyday of PSNJ streetcar operations, this was a major transfer point for not only several streetcar lines, but also, a few bus routes as well.
As I've lived within 10 minutes of this location for nearly 40 years, I know this area very well indeed.
The PSNJ bus seen here had departed the busy 125th St. Ferry terminal at Edgwater only a few minutes earlier. (at this time, the 125th St. Ferry was also a PSNJ operation)
It is seen heading west towards Anderson Avenue, on what today is the eastbound side of Columbia Avenue.
The streetcar is operating on the HUDSON RIVER LINE (Paterson-Edgewater), heading east.
The private ROW where the streetcar is boarding passengers is now a grassy area where tall pine trees now tower. However, the utility poles remain.
All other traces of the streetcars has long since vanished (service on the cars ended in 1938); the "lower level" off to the right is now the westbound side of Columbia Avenue.
This area was a transfer/terminal point for PS/TNJ/NJT/ACADEMY buses for many years; however, this location is no longer a terminal point.
The GRANT LEE theatre on the left still stands (minus its marquee), now housing a furniture store as well as several smaller shops.......

Here's a busy bygone Jersey City street scene, taken sometime during the 1940's.
The elderly bus seen in the background was operated by the BERGEN AVENUE LINES; until about 1950, when the Jersey City "indies" rosters were mostly made up of "modern" rear-engined coaches, a few of the old front-engined jobs were kept for rush-hour tripper service.
Truly a bygone glimpse of a long-ago Jersey City......

From 1954 until the 1980's, the simple station seen here at Franklin Avenue (Belleville), served as the terminal point for the Newark City Subway's PCC streetcars; a number of PSNJ bus routes also connected with the subway cars at this point.
Today, a new "light rail" station occupies this site; the venerable old PCC's have been gone a decade now; the vintage PS buses seen here have been gone for decades.
These wonderful, nostalgic old views date to 1955.......

Two vintage PSNJ "square windows" vie for attention with a venerable, ancient PS streetcar, which has just left the still-uncompleted Franklin Avenue City Subway terminal, heading back to bustling downtown Newark (Pennsylvania Station).
The 1947 photo date given here is incorrect; this view dates to late 1953, when PSNJ was taking delivery of the second hand (ex-TCRT) PCC's, and a new loop and station was being built here to accomodate them at Franklin Avenue.
Nothing seen here remains today......

Another timeless scene at Franklin Avenue, 1954.
Bus is operating on the "#15 NUTLEY"; also, note front dash advertisement for PALISADES AMUSEMENT PARK, which has been closed since the early 1970's.
This is a VERY different scene, today.....

The original Franklin Avenue station of the City Subway, about 1950.
In the years before the ex-TCRT PCC's came online in late 1953 and early 1954, this station was a stub-ended facility, as the old PS streetcars were double-ended, and required no reversal loop.
Note PS buses on the left.
Note, too, the ERIE hopper perched on the adjoining coal trestle.
As you might expect, nothing seen here exists today......

This unidentified scene (circa 1949), appears to have been taken at the old PSNJ Greenville yards at Jersey City.
Note that the streetcar had been converted over to a single-ender sometime in the past, and, also, note the "bug eye" running lights on the roof.
These were characteristics of HUDSON DIVISION operations.
The classic grey/white of the PSNJ bus on the left is truly timeless in itself.....

Here's a rare view indeed; the busy PSNJ terminal at Paterson, a bustling streetcar/bus facilty, about 1937.
Note NRHS special on the left......the railfans of that era sure dressed up for the occassion!
PSNJ coaches were quite formidable vehicles, back in the day!
Unil 1928, NJRT* (North Jersey Rapid Transit) interurbans also called here; the last HUDSON RIVER line streetcars ran in 1938.
*The NJRT was taken over by PS in 1926.

Classic streetcar/bus scenes at Newark, 1937......
Note the one photo shows a streetcar operating into the long-gone PS terminal, displaying signs for the "23 CENTRAL".
That line was one of several which became subway-surface routes exclusively in 1935, when the CITY SUBWAY opened, and would not have used these rails after the Subway opened.
The dash sign destinations, including Hudson Division points (Bayonne, Jersey City, Union City) indicate a fan trip of sorts in progress.
The vintage buses on the left, like the streetcar, would indeed make for stunning museum pieces today!

NEW YORK OMNIBUS
2629,
Great photos!
Re; pictures just above;
The bus in the top picture appears to be a late thirties Mack Model CW and probably one of the 'Newark Independents' that vied with Public Service traction cars on the same routes for years.
The bus in the second photo is a Yellow Model 740 and would have to have been Public Service Coordinated Transport because they were the only operators in Jersey that ran that model transit.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Mr. 'L' |
