On this day in 1956, the last streetcars ran in Dallas.

Until the 1960s, Dallas also had a trolleybus system; trolleybus service in Dallas began in 1945 with 30 TC-44 coaches.

Another order for 24 ACF TC-44s came in 1947.

The last new electric coaches were 16 MARMON-HERRINGTON TC-48s.

in 1959, a/c units were added to 80 of of the vehicles.

Dallas also operated 10 used MARMON-HERRINGTON coaches from Cincinnati............

Mention must be made of the long-gone "LEONARD'S M&O SUBWAY", a shuttle streetcar operation that linked the store's parking lots to the basement of the department store itself.

The cars were revamped PCCs from Washington.

Sadly, the cars were later modernized, which totally destroyed their original sleek appearance.

Thankfully, one car has been restored to its original appearance, and currently resides in a bank lobby, on permanent display............

Dallas PCCs in Boston......

In 1958, the MTA (Boston) purchased a group pf 25 double-ended PCCs from Dallas, to run on the Mattapan-Ashmont line (this is the only line in Boston to still use PCCs)

In later years, these handsome cars were rebuilt into single-ended cars, which did npthing at all to enhance their appearance........ Razz

Texas had it's share of interesting trolley and interurban systems in the past. My little knowledge is only based upon a book or two in my collection. As for the Tandy line, PCC's YES, boxes NO!

Cyberider:

It was nothing short of DESECRATION when the Tandy Subway's ex-DC PCCs were "upgraded" to look like some sort of insipid-looking "people mover" at a Disney theme park! Razz

Dallas, also, back in the day, was also a great spot for highway coach enthusiasts, what with TRAILWAYS not only having its corporate HQ there, but also, a vast yard and service facilities that indeed made for interesting photo opportunities! Wink

Alas, it's all so long ago, now....... Sad
