Yesterday I stumbled upon a website dedicated to fares and fare control pertaining to NYC mass transit. While much of it is dedicated to subways, there also is a lot of bus related info, such as historical images of bus transfers (including those issued by the former PBLs). There is a lot of content thus some persistent "digging" may be needed but the effort is worth it:
