Just heard on Eyewitness News that a 13 year old was stabbed to death by another 13-year old aboard an MTA bus in Eltingville.

Sad, pathetic, and so damn heartbreaking.

And too damn COMMONPLACE.

IMHO, it's going to get worse before it even begins to get better.

My sympathies to the family of the deceased teen.

Recall, long ago, when the other boroughs began to slide downwards, Staten Island was seen as a refuge, by so many New Yorkers trying to escape the rising crime ion the other boroughs........let's face it. Sad

Truly sad that one cannot even ride on a city bus (or subway) these days, without the very real fear that serious harm might be coming their way. Mad

The bus involved in this tragic crime was #8717, running on the "S78" on Hylan Boulevard........

During the earlier Eyewitness News report, I also noticed that the route number indicator at the rear of the bus was "flipping"/"scrolling" at a rapid-fire pace, during the police investigation, where the bus was pulled over adjacent to a gas station.

Not surprisingly, the MTA driver was said to be "pretty shaken up", and certainly no wonder.........

Joe:

According to an MTA page, the "S-78" runs between the St. George ferry terminal and the Bricktown Mall...........

Wonder what the S78 was known as before the radical renumberings of the 1980's.

W.B:

I was thinking the same thing, when this tragic story broke.

Recall, way back in the day, when the SI routes were identified with an "R" prefix................

*Just did a quick online search; the "S78" was originally the "R-103"..........

Recall, also, that, by the late 1960's, Staten Island was the "home base" for the remaining "Pattons" (MACKS) in the "Tee-Yay" fleet.

Growing up in the 60's, I can still remember seeing only Old Looks and MACKS at the St. George Terminal, prior to the introduction of the Fishbowls...........

*On the page whose link I just previously posted, note that, while there are two "Sherman" photos, there are none showing the formidable "Pattons", which were commonplace on Staten Island until the late 1960's.

(at least, the humble "Dangerfields" finally got a little "respect"!)

Note, also, the rare photos of the SIRT ticket windows at the original St. George terminal (destroyed by fire in 1946), as well as a photo of the old 39th St. ferry terminal in Brooklyn)..........

W.B/all:

This page features a number of rare Staten Island bus (TWU) photos (showing a variety of rolling stock) from the 1940's into the 1980's..........

ATU, actually - the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 726, which represented S.I. and (I.I.N.M.) Queens bus drivers. But yep, the pics are indeed remarkable. And from that farebox, we see 'CA' was the Castleton code. I think 'YUK' was Yukon depot. Wasn't the ill-fated Edgewater depot (where a few WMATA's fell into the water) 'EDG'?

Oh, and I made a jaunt to SI today, to shop at a Stop & Shop to get some foodstuffs I couldn't find in my abode of Manhattan - the S48 on which I traveled to and from "the Ferry" en route to that store, had once been the R/S107. As the buses don't travel that frequently on weekends, I walked down Forest Avenue several blocks before I got a bus back to St. George. (Going to SI, I was on the "John Marchi" and coming back I rode on the "Michael Ollis.")
