|
|
53 years ago yesterday in New York City bus history… MaBSTOA and NYCTA implemented exact fare on buses.
The fare was 20 cents and drivers no longer would make change. The driver’s coin changers became a thing of the past, “antiques” and Johnson/Keene K-25 fare boxes had their pedestals changed from the ones with coin return drawers to safety deposit vaults.
Informing bus passengers of the change came in a variety of forms as evident by the ad on the batwing bus; the paper flyer pasted on the interior of bus windows; placards attached to the fare boxes, etc.

OUTSTANDING historic photos, as usual!
For so many years, I remember buses drivers making change; I, in all honesty, cannot recall exactly when "Joisey" companies went over to exact fare.
The suburban companies (most later operated by NJT) always had drivers making change)
Though exact change DID, I am sure, speed boarding, it is still sobering to think of what the REAL reason was that the exact change policy went into affect in "Noo Yawk", as well as so many other cities.....

*In Baltimore, in June, 1968, a BTC driver was fatally shot and robbed of his $65.00 change fund by three lowlife hoodlums.
An exact change policy quickly went into effect shortly after the senseless murder of Charles A. Synder.
Sadly, this was the "sign of the times", on transit systems across the nation, as the 1960's gave way to the 1970's.......

From what I read, it was robberies of that nature that led to the institution of the "Exact Change on Buses" policy. Just as, say, vandalism of upholstered seats led to fiberglass seats being installed, and so on.
