For a change, some GOOD new was actually reported on the news, last evening! Wink

A new Staten Island boat is about to enter service; this boat will be the first new vessel to enter the fleet in many years.

She is the "SSG MICHAEL H. HOLLIS", named for a Staten Island hometown hero.

he carries on the tradition, started by the "BARBERI"-Class boats 40 years ago, of carrying only passengers.

Though decidedly quite modern in her lines, she still features the "traditional" look of a double-ended New York Harbor; the SI Ferry has been operating double-ended vessel since the Civil War era.

Unlike the much smaller passenger ferries commonplace these days in the harbor, the newest addition to the proud SI fleet still LOOKS like a FERRYBOAT! Very Happy

Like the famed vehicular/passenger ferries serving Puget Sound, the Staten Island fleet, though modern in appearance, STILL caries on the long-established "tradition" of double-ended ferries in NY Harbor.

Here's wishing a LONG and SAFE career with America's most famous ferry! Wink

As noted previously, all new Staten Island boats have been passenger-only vessels since the "BARBERI" boats entered service 40 years ago.

Interestingly, as far back as the mid-1960's, there was some talk of converting the steam ferries of the "MISS NEW YORK" class into passenger-only vessels, by converting their vehicular gangways into passengers cabins; nothing came of this, and the three streamlined ferries continued to carry vehicles until they were retired.

On another interesting note, the "PVT. JOSEPH F. MERRELL" was unique in that she was the only one of her class to be furnished with folding benches in the vehicle gangways.

Many, many years ago, on certain rush-hour sailings, vehicles were banned from this boat, and an additional 1300 passenger were able to be carried on the car deck.

In the winter months, four steel doors were dropped down to give protection from the weather; wooden wing doors were installed to allow the movement of passengers.

However, when these steel doors were damaged by high-clearance vehicles, this practice was abandoned.....

Here's an excellent (and exhaustive) page on the Ferry, its history, operations, and vessels throughout the years.......

This pre-1946 fire photo shows a one-car ("ME-1") SIRT train (more than likely a South Beach train) departing the old St. George terminal.

Note the ferry slips in the background; these were used by the 39th St. boats (which ceased operation as a result of the 1946 blaze which destroyed the entire St. George terminal), and, also as lay-up slips.....

Here is another photo from about the same location, pre-1946 fire.

Note the idle ferry in the background.

Also, on the left, you will see a steam-hauled train; steam passenger operation ended in the mid-1920's on the SIRT, when the three lines were electrified, in anticipation of a linkup with the BMT's 4th Avenue line in Brooklyn, via new tunnels under the Narrows.

There is no way to be totally sure about the presence of this train, but, IMHO, this photo might have been taken during WW2, and the steam-powered train MIGHT have been a troop train, connecting with troop transports docking in the Stapleton/Clifton area.......

A similar view, taken about the time the new St. George terminal construction was beginning.

Look closely in the background, and you can see two "ELECTRIC FERRIES" on the 69th St. route......

Here's a page on the multi-modal St. George Terminal; the "new improved" interior bears no resemblance at all to what I was so familiar with for so many years; it's far too modernistic and "cold" for my tastes. more "in sync" with any bland shopping mall.

The SIRT concourse on the lower level is even more barren, more atkin to a morgue or hospital...... Sad

SI FERRY fleet list; note that the 1965 "KENNEDY" is the very last remaining boat from the "KENNEDY" Class; these were also the first diesels in the fleet (1965)

She is also the last survivor of her class; the boats of this class were also the very last designed to carry motor vehicles.....

Here's an excellent page featuring many rare old photos (and, also, modern-era views) of the SI Ferry through the decades........

In relation to the two pre-1946 photos at St. George, where a steam-hauled train is visible, see this photo:

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?115368

Here we see a passenger train, hauled by a B&O camelback at St. George, surrounded by ME-1 electric MU's (in this photo, it appears the train is backing in to the terminal)

Note the old "main line" wooden coaches in this consist; look closely, and you can see a second steam train still at the platforms.

Again, of course, I cannot be totally sure, but I think that this might have been a WW-2 era troop train, that would be connecting with ships in the Stapleton/Clifton area......

The often ill-fated "ANDREW J. BARBERI", now one of the oldest vessels in the fleet, ushered in the era of passenger-only ferries on the Staten Island run, in the early 1980's.......
