It is sad that the cavernous, two-level 9th Avenue car house no longer exists; this massive structure played an important role in the development and testing of PCC technology, back in the 1930's.

The last cars assigned to this depot were the Peter Witts and the PCC's (interestingly, the 100-car PCC fleet was only based out of this facility).

The double-ended Peter Witts (the 8000's) were retired sometime around 1954; from that date until the end of all Brooklyn streetcar service in 1956, only the PCC's, along with assorted work equipment, remained........

BIRNEYS were always pretty much out-of-place on "big city" streetcar systems, including Brooklyn's, even on the most lightly-traveled lines.

The BRT ordered slightly over 200 of the small, single-truck cars from BRILL and from CINCINNATI.

These diminutive streetcar ran on every shuttle line on the system; the only line they held down exclusively was the FLUSHING-RIDGEWOOD line.

By the mid-1930's, the BIRNEYS were either sold off or scrapped, but some were converted into work cars, some of which remained in active (non-revenue) service until the last PCC's ran in Brooklyn, in October, 1956.

This nostalgic photo, taken in 1941, shows a BIRNEY now used as a rail grinder, at the cavernous 9th Avenue depot......

Here's a busy, timeless, 1940's-era scene at an (unidentified) B&QT car house, featuring a number of PCC's and double-ended Peter Witts (8000's)

A glimpse of a long-lost Brooklyn, for certain......

This photo of PCC #1021 on the Brooklyn Bridge would date to sometime between 1945 and 1950, when the last B&QT streetcars crossed over the span.

After the BMT's elevated trains stopped running over the bridge in 1944, the streetcars were shifted over to the former El tracks, and new overhead was installed.

The former streetcar tracks were then paved over, to create additional vehicular lanes......

The new meets the old in this classic photo taken at the cavernous 9th Avenue carhouse's lower level.

Here we have PCC #1032 alongside a double-ended 8000-series Peter Witt (#8361), making for an interesting comparison in streetcar designs......

In this rare color view (circa-1950), we see several single-ended 6000-series single-ended Peter Witts awaiting their next runs, at the Box St.-Greenpoint depot.

Though these cars were newer than the the double-ended 8000's, they were retired earlier.

The 6000's were all retired during 1951; sadly, none of these handsome cars were saved.

The 100 car fleet was built by BRILL and OSGOOD-BRADLEY.....

Sad that nothing in this wonderful circa-1940 photo remains today.

Up above, we see a train of elderly BMT elevated cars (note the convertibles in the consist) near the Sands St. station.

Down below, we have a single-ended 6000-series car, along with a double-ended 8000-series......

Vanderbilt & Grand Army Plaza, circa-1950.

This wonderfully nostalgic photo not only depicts the bygone Brooklyn trolleys of yore, but also, the long-ago days of well-dressed folks and big, distinctive, American-built autos.

On the left we have PCC #1061, meeting up with single-ended Peter Witt #6112.

Note also, the once-commonplace two-aspect traffic signal.......

Even though the old traffic signals had only red and green lights, they could yield more than two indications…
When changing from green to red, they would be lit together for a couple of seconds as a warning, like a yellow light indication.
Or, they could flash a red light, to indicate a stop and proceed…

traildriver:

Good point to bring up!

Yes, I well recall these long-gone "two-light" traffic signals; they were still commonplace in certain areas of metro New Jersey, when I was growing up.

Recall, too, dating from the 1920's, the two-light signals that also had semaphore blades, reading "STOP" and "GO".

Many "three-light" traffic signals from the later 1930's and 1940's, in my general area, were still in use into the 1980's.

Today's new "hi tech" lights (no more incandescent bulbs behind a colored lens) just don't have the "appeal" that the old, cast-iron pedestal lights had.

Gone, too, are the cast-iron relay boxes attached to the signal's base; I use to love the clicking and whirring of the mechanism when the lights changed; the sounds were especially audible later in the evening, when traffic was dying off.

Ahhh, memories.....

Here are two more vintage scenes where vintage "two light" traffic signals are represented; the first dates to 1972, and was taken at Avenue J & Bedford......

Worthy of inclusion here is this "traffic signal" of sorts, warning motorists of the presence of a streetcar "safety zone" loading platform.

This particular one was in Brooklyn; through the 1930's, PSNJ also used warning lights on their safety islands in Newark......

Another Brooklyn photo (from 1949)

Note the heavy relay box mounted to the signal's pedestal base, quite evocative of a long-ago era,,,,,,,
