W.B.:

....that name change came only one month prior to the massive Wanamaker fire; a train of of Brooklyn bound R-17's (a Pelham local) became stranded in the Astor Place station (Lexington Avenue line) when flood waters covered the tracks, and the roadbed caved in beneath the train.

Thankfully, the passengers were safely evacuated, and the crew, also, made it out OK......a LOT of heavy work was later required to remove the stranded subway cars from the flooded station.

The blaze was a five-alarmer, and more than 800 firemen were on the scene; more than 50 companies were called in to fight the stubborn inferno.

Remarkably, despite the extreme damage to tracks, roadbed, and signals, the "Tee-Yay" had the Lexington Avenue line fully up and running only five days after service was knocked out......

I'd concur with that. 1947 at the earliest.

W.B.:

IMHO, the YELLOW 740's, though, indeed, quite up-to-the-minute when they first entered service, became quite dated fairly quickly, looking almost antique when compared to the new Old Looks when they began arriving on FACCo property (recall, too, those 740's, that were updated with modern Old Look-style front ends, after WW2)........

Compare these photos of YELLOWS; the "standard" version has more of a prewar MACK look to it (at least, to me), while the bus with the modernized Old Look-style front end, certainly looks more modern, than a 740 in its original configuration........

Had WW2 not intervened, I'm wagering that the double-deckers in FACCo's fleet (at least the open top buses) would have vanished far earlier than they did.

Then again, given the fact that the company retired ALL double-deckers by 1953, I can envision an all single-deck FACCo fleet by the mid-1940's, had not the War happened, and the "Queen Mary"-types had not been purchased.....

Image #154383 had to have been taken between 1950 and 1955, given the paint scheme and NYCO branding; had it been taken after 1956, the lettering would doubtless have indicated 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.'

But even before the war, both NYCO and FACCo acquired White buses for crosstown routes . . .

W.B.:

It's funny how WHITES never really made strong inroads into the various "Noo Yawk" fleets (WHITE 798's could be found in great profusion in Chicago, many years back, and soldiered on into the 1960's)

Here in my area of NJ (Hudson County) when I was growing up, several models of WHITES were well-represented in the both the NHBL and INTER-CITY fleets (INTER-CITY's WHITES were suburban models)

This brings to mind the square-window Old Looks in their last few years in "Noo Yawk"; were they still in "base" service, or, had they already been relegated to rush-hour tripper service only?

Earlier here, I'd mention the old WANNAMAKERS Department Store; these two MaBSTOA views from 1982, show the now-shuttered shuttered., a silent relic of days gone by, a glowering, tattered, towering monument to bygone bargains.......

West Farms depot?

But this reminded me of the last years of the venerable RTS's, where they were relegated to routes in "poor" neighborhoods while the wealthier ones got the newer models.

W.B.:

I well recall this scenario a few years back, also; the media was giving it quite a bit of coverage (funny, bus fans never seem to mind older models on routes they use!) Wink

In my area of NJ, back in the day, the scenario generally went like this: as new buses arrived, the older buses were relegated to running only during the rush hours (I remember this well); so, when you'd start to see Old Looks (later, it would have been Fishbowls or METROs) you knew that another rush hour was nigh.......

"LONG IN THE TOOTH"

(it's obvious that these buses* had not been "pampered" as they were when they were new models; after all, they'd soon be meeting the torch) Sad

*When these photos were snapped, were only Old Looks serving these lines?

What replaced them? (Fishbowls or Flex New Looks)
