On this day in 1973:

The very last game was played at the "old" Yankee Stadium.

In 1973, transit-wise, the very few remaining "Shermans" were about to be put out to pasture.

The 1925 SIRT ME-1's were replaced with R-44's.

The "Eye-Are-Tee" was now 100% SMEE equipped (with the exception of those prewar cars retained for work service)

And, of course, the "Toid Aven-uh" El up in "da Bronx" would cease service, replaced by new "stoa" Fishbowls.........

Not only did BOTH "Noo YawK" teams win this evening, but the Amazins' were truly AMAZING......winning BOTH games of a double-header, something they have not done in FAR too long!! Shocked Shocked Very Happy Very Happy

Now......if only this sort of performance had been more prevalent this past season! Wink

With the last games of the regular season played on Sunday (today), it is a sure bet that most "Noo Yawk" baseball fans will, indeed, be MORE than happy to bid the floundering, insipid, blundering 2023 season* farewell (and, who can blame them?) Rolling Eyes

'OA's' "Shermans" were all put out to pasture by 1973 (this included those exiled in their last few years to Brooklyn for 'Tee-Yay' service) - but this was also the year the last of the first-gen FACL and ST Fishbowls were also retired and headed for the scrap heap. Thus, as far as " 'stoa" was concerned, the oldest buses still in service were the 1963 set of second-gen Fishbowls, the newest the custom-built T6H-5309A's - with, in "da Bronx" (and on the key route that went to "The Stadium"), a few "Dangerfields" sprinkled here and there.

The end of Yankee Stadium I(a) also marked the end of the 1959 scoreboard (and time display with Longines promo at the entrance) that had been built by All American Scoreboards.

However, underground on the 'Eye-En-Dee', there were still a few more years to savor the pre-war 'Arnines' [even up to the first months of the 1976 baseball season back at what was now Yankee Stadium I(b)]. Such oldies were also to be found on the 'Bee-Em-Tee's' Eastern Division routes up to the start of the 1977 baseball season.

W.B.

Here in "Noo Joisey", back in '73 the remaining handful of the famed ex-ERIE "Stillwell" coaches were still in service on the Port Jervis line out of Hoboken (hauled by classic E-8's), but would be retired by the fall of '74, replaced ny new P-S "push-pulls", hauled by the hulking, snorting "U-boats".

In Hudson County, there were still at least some "Shermans" cavorting about (NHBL/SHBL/BERGEN AVENUE/L&G/MONTGOMERY & WEST SIDE, RED & TAN/ BROADWAY (Bayonne).

Quite a few of these hard-working relics would disappear when the massive influx of NJDOT "Dangerfields" began arriving in 1976/1977, but some would hang on into the 1980's, with the very last retiring in 1986.

TNJ still was operating a number of first-generation, ex-PSNJ Fishbowls, at the time; these, too, would be displaced by the new "Dangerfields".

On the SI FERRY, the "MERRELL"-class steam ferries were also on the crossing, and would remain in use until the new (passenger only) "BARBERI" boats went into service in the early 1980's.

On former NYCRR electrified lines out of GCT, you could still ride ex-NYCRR postwar P-S and ST. LOUIS MU's.

The venerable BUDD cars (RDC's) were also still in service; here in "Joisey", the ailing CNJ's RDC's were still running on the old "Bayonne Scoot" shuttle (until 1978), and ex-DL&W "Wickerliner" MU's still were in charge of the electrified M&E lines out of Hoboken.

Too, you still had the famed, long-lived ex-NH FL9's, running in and out of GCT (they,of course, looked their FINEST when they were still stylishly attired in that ever-classic, eye-catching McGuiness scheme!

How much of this I remember......aaahhh, memories!Wink

Yet another "strikeout" (so to speak) for the Mets..........

Just heard that Mets General Manager Buck Showalter will not be back for the 2024 season, after being canned.

I've been hearing newscasters referring to the Mets 2023 season was one of the most humiliating, disappointing, and lackluster seasons in all of franchise history (a million miles away from the glory days of '69!)

Too, the team has also been plagued with player injuries and a host of other depressing issues.

Of course, the Yankees aren't in the post-season, either.

"GOOD RIDDANCE" is the term being used by 1010 a newsman, regarding the end of the 2023 season.

Let's all hope that NEXT season will be better for BOTH "Noo Yawk" teams (recall, also, the "Bombers" historic losing streak (9 games?) not all that long ago)

At least, now, the 2023 season will be put to rest.....for good......

Funny . . . seems those saying that haven't heard of their very first season (40-120) of 1962 (and Casey Stengel asking, "Can't Anybody Here Play This Game?") . . . nor of the 1990's and "The Worst Team That Money Can Buy."

Still, this was a losing season for the once-"Amazin's" in terms of W-L record . . . the Yanks are above .500, though of course that's (very) little consolation.

W.B.:

Good points.

Just heard on 1010 WINS that both the Yankees and the Mets are trailing in their respective games. Sad

And to think, only yesterday, BOTH "Noo Yawk" teams won, while the Mets took both games of a double-header.

If BOTH the Yankees and Mets lose today, it will, sadly, be a quite appropriate finish to the barely-middling (and often downright dismal) 2023 season........ Sad

Well, the 2023 bloodletting is finally (and mercifully) over.

Just heard the Yanks lost their final game of the season, while the Mets are getting CRUSHED.

For 2024, I think both the G.M.'s and the players HAVE to get their collective acts together; I would not want to see an "instant replay" of the 2023 season; then again, none of us do.

It's all so pathetic that it is not even laughable........... Sad Crying or Very sad

This just in:

The Mets (finishing in 4th place) also lost their final game of the regular season. Sad

Ditto the "Bombers". Crying or Very sad

Not a happy time in "Mets Land", for certain.............

The 2023 season is (mercifully) over for both "Noo Yawk" teams, and, though it is now a little more than a week since the season ended, the "Amazins'" are once again in the news (and, again, negatively) this time involving still more management-level chaos, which might turn ugly. Sad

Anyone here have a Ouiji board handy, so we can try to get a certain Mr. Hodges to try to solve the Mets' latest management woes?

W.B.:

I've been thinking the same thing for awhile; indeed, a man very much "in the background's background", for certain.

All said and done, we'll never see anyone like the late, great Gil Hodges again, that's for certain.

Though the Yankees, of course fared some better than the Mets this highly-disappointing 2023 season, both teams suffered greatly from what was obviously lackluster, inept, careless players, and upper-echelon "big shots" who, clearly, either didn't care much, or simply took the path of least resistance.

Though a few noteworthy players on both teams shone this past season, most of the other players made "Charlie Brown's All-Stars" look like the '69 Mets by comparison................. Razz

W.B.:

At one time, baseball was indeed "America's pastime"........it was a GAME, period.

Today, it is a multi-billion dollar business, with players (sadly, a number with questionable playing skills, and all-too-huge egos) making astronomical salaries (which sickens me), just to play a GAME for several months each year.

Strangely, there is little or no money available for senior care, the care of our veterans, education, and for government programs that are vital lifelines to so many of limited means.

Sad, too, that the average "working-class Joe" has to hold down multiple jobs just to support his family, while pro baseball (and football and basketball players) are paid multiple millions just to PLAY a GAME.

IMHO, I think our priorities are WAY off base, these days............
