IMHO, the tough, hulking, no-nonsense F40PH was AMTRAK's most iconic diesel, way back in the day; I loved 'em on NJT, too......most IMPRESSIVE-looking machines, for sure........ Wink

Like the timeless "AMFLEET" cars, the old "Heritage" fleet were always tremendous favorites of mine; in 1986, when boarding an eastbound "BROADWAY" at Union Station (I was heading back to Newark), imagine my great surprise (and delight!) to find a classic DOME car in the consist.....it was my first and ONLY dome car experience....and, it truly was nothing short of timeless......and MAGICAL....... How much AMTRAK has changed, in nearly 50 years......

These photos (taken at Chicago, and dating from between 1971 and 1974) are particularly nostalgic; they also remind us that, early on, AMTRAK also rostered a number of heavyweight cars.

These classic photos indeed take you back to a more colorful era of American railroading.......

This timeless 1970's-era "portrait" photo (at New York) is truly nostalgic, and, indeed, also has a "museum" quality to it as well (also note early "Jersey Arrow" MU's)......

Here's the bulbous-nosed UAT "Turbo" at New Haven in 1978, beneath ex-NH catenary.......

Recalling the long-ago days when AMTRAK operated both "heritage" locomotives and rolling stock (Chicago, 1974).......

Here's a particularly rare photo, taken at Boston in 1971, on the very first day of AMTRAK.......

Here is another view of the same train at Metropark, as seen in the previous photo; note the ex-NORTHERN PACIFIC car carrying "C B Q" markings.

Truly a timeless slice of what once was, and is now long gone.......

Here's another (early) AMTRAK scene at Chicago, showing Train #58, with a lengthy consist.

The coach yards off to the left today strongly evoke the overall feel of a rail museum of later years.......
