It is lucky that a typescript of Vincent Seyfried's roster of the Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) found its way to the University of Michigan. Google has provided a free copy! The search tool (control F) works.

I met Vincent a few times, once on an early fan trip on Hudson Bergen Light Rail. Two things stand out: He was magnanimous with divulging what he learned. Recall that he was a teacher in a Queens JHS. He shared, as educators must. Secondly, his work derived from a huge amount of time spent in libraries, the main library in Jamaica and (I would guess) the engineering library on 40th Street near Bryant Park. He took notes, and then he published at his own expense.

Joe:
These days, only the most astute traction historians are familiar with TARS; the Manhattan routes have been gone over 70 years, to date, with the Bronx lines were converted to SURFACE buses not long afterwards.
The last vestiges of the TARS network, in lower Westchester, lasted until the early 1950's.
Truly ancient (streetcar) history in Manhattan would also encompass NEW YORK RAILWAYS and METROPOLITAN RAILWAYS.
Thankfully, a few TARS cars are still around today; the photographs taken of the system, by rail enthusiasts now long-since deceased, are more than invaluable to us today.....
