Integral to the ERIE's passenger and freight operations on the Jersey City waterfront were the monumental "Bergen Arches".......

A timeless image of the ERIE ferry "TUXEDO" entering one of the slips at the ramshackle terminal at Chambers St, Manhattan.

As was the case at the railroad's Jersey City terminal, there was no provision for upper deck loading at Chambers St..

ERIE ferry service to Chambers St. was closed down in December, 1958.

Like the NYCRR's West Shore ferry operations, upper deck loading was never employed......

In 1958, not long before the last ERIE ferries sailed between Jersey City and Chambers St., we see the "ARLINGTON" heading back to Jersey City.

This boat, and her sister, "JAMESTOWN", were the last two ERIE boats in service; by this late date, one boat would be in service, while the other was laid up in one of the slips at the Pavonia terminal, serving mostly as a "spare"......

This map, which pre-dates the 1955 closing of the DL&W's Christopher St. ferry, shows the vast complex of passenger and freight trackage from the Hoboken terminal south to just above the ERIE's Pavonia terminal in Jersey City.

With the exception of the trackage used by NJT today, none of the vast yards survive today; the area is now entirely built over.

It is hard to believe that virtually everything depicted on this map no longer exists......

Here's a beautiful old postcard view of the "ERIE LIMITED" near Port Jervis, just prior to the dieselization of ERIE's through trains.

Magnificent "through line" engines such as this were, at first ,"bumped" down into the commuter pool, and, later, retired and scrapped.

The last ERIE steamers dropped their fires in 1953; the final steam-hauled ERIE train was a commuter run out of Jersey City.

Many of the heavyweight cars seen in this consist, however, lasted well into the E-L era......

Even when standing still, steam locomotives (such as #3176) were truly impressive and majestic.

This timeless photo was taken at the ERIE's Jersey City engine facility, in 1940, just west of the passenger terminal/ferry depot at the foot of Pavonia Avenue.......

Here is an interesting page on the ERIE's Pavonia terminal; the article states that the terminal was demolished in 1961 (there are also other errors on this page0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavonia_Terminal

This is incorrect; the terminal buildings were demolished after ferry service to Chambers St. ended in December, 1958.

There are a number of good photos/maps on this page; the photo of a walking-beam ferry shows the stack adorned with stripes, which originally adorned the stacks of ERIE boats prior to the famed diamond, which was used for decades.

The very last sidewheel ERIE ferry, the "PASSAIC" (II) was not retired until 1935; at this late date, she sailed across the North (Hudson) River in the company of some of the ERIE's earliest diesel tugs.

There is also a photo here showing one of the columns at the PATH (H&M) station, displaying the old name "PAVONIA NEWPORT"*

*There is also information here on the H&M/PATH station at this location.....

One interesting fact regarding the ERIE was that it was the first "main line" railroad in the greater New York/New Jersey area to install advertising posters in and on its stations, as well as on suburban platforms.

1910-era photos already show a plethora of ad posters on station platform; such posters could also be found at the ERIE's ferry slips, in Jersey City and Manhattan.

In later years, these signs were mounted in frames bearing "TDI" plaques; such advertising posters dominated commuter rail stations in the area.

Like the ERIE (and later, the E-L) the CNJ also displayed numerous ads in their stations and on the platforms; such signs always added an intresting and colorful "big city" aura to the depots.....

traildriver:

I think that 'Fallen Flags" site is having issues; I just tried to click on several photo links, and all I got was a "server not found" message.

I know this site was having issues awhile back, and was even down for some weeks.

Let's hope this issue is corrected soon.....

More on the the massive E-L cuts of late 1966......

The electrified Montclair Branch, prior to the late 1966 cuts, was operating close to 60 round trips a day, between Hoboken and the old Montclair terminal at "Lackawanna Plaza".

After the cuts, there were only 12 round trips each weekday (six in each direction, rush hours only)

Weekend service was abolished entirely.

With through trains west of Port Jervis also discontinued, Port Jervis was now relegated to a commuter-only station, with reduced service.

As was also the case with the other E-L diesel commuter lines, Saturday services were drastically cut, and there was no Sunday service.

The "NEW YORK MAIL" and "THE OWL", the last vestiges of service to Buffalo, made their final runs in 1969; these trains were primarily mail and express trains, but carried a coach or two for paying customers.

Early in the E-L era, diners were assigned to these trains; after the diners were cut from these trains, passengers dined at the restaurant in the Binghamton station; there was always sufficient time for a decent bite here, as mail and express loadings at this station, typically, consumed at least a half-hour, back in the day......

Note to traildriver:

It seems as though the "Fallen Flag" site glitch has been corrected; I just tried several of the links from that site I posted, and all worked. Very Happy

Hopefully, you can see the photos you could not see previously (always look forward to your comments!)...... Wink
