traildriver:
Thanks, I had no idea that the old R&T garage had closed down.
Living in northeast NJ for all of my 65 years, I recall Red & Tan well through the years (I can still recall WHITE 798's, as well as Old Looks out of Journal Square!)
When ACADEMY was operating the "#22 HILLSIDE", Mom used it frequently (1980's/early 1990's) for shopping; after awhile the drivers got to know her, and, quite often, would help her with her shopping bags!
I never liked the sound of "COACH USA":, like NJT, it just sounds to "conglomerate/"generic" for my tastes; "RED & TAN", on the other hand, SOUNDED like a BUS company!
How we all took so much for granted......

I remember way back when the old Hudson County-area "indies" were pretty much "kissin' cousins"; at, say, the SHBL garage in Bayonne, or the HUDSON BUS yard on Tonnelle Avenue (Jersey City) it was commonplace to see RED & TAN and DROGIN buses alongside the NHBL and SHBL buses.
Then again, at the bus yard in Hoboken (off Willow Avenue) you'd not only see ACADEMY buses, but also, buses from NHBL, WASHINGTON ST., and LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE, and others.
Some of these buses were still in service; others were clearly there as "parts donors".
I remember snapping a photo of an OOS suburban Old Look (SOMERSET), back in 1978, that had a decided list to port............

Here's a few old photos snapped at the Willow Avenue yard; quite awhile back, I believe that the OOS Old Look (LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE) was identified as being an ex-NYCTA bus, quite awhile ago.
Also, note the stripped ex-PSNJ Old Look just behind slumbering NHBL Fishbowl B-134......

Diversity is clearly in evidence, back on a dreary day in 1975, at the SHBL garage in Bayonne (note the approaches to the Bayonne Bridge in the background)
A NHBL Old Look can be glimpsed on the right; looks like that might be a DROGIN Fishbowl to the rear.....

ACADEMY.............
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Bus_Lines
I've learned that the old "BOULEVARD EAST" express line (rush hours, Nungessers-Hoboken) which I commuted on from 1994 until 2001, later became the "22 X" (NJT operated it for awhile) and is now operated by COACH USA.
I remember, before the RTS buses arrived, FLX METROS were used on this route; I particularly liked the 3200's with their high-backed, cushioned seats.......

I am going to really get into this article later on tonite; I just went through the photos quickly, and, man, those old buses were GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!
LOVE seeing the drivers in FULL uniform; you had to be in GOOD physical shape to handle one of those brutes!!!!!

Long ago, BUS WORLD had an excellent feature article on railroad-owned buses,
There was even a 1940's photo showing two PSNJ YELLOW coaches, lettered "SUSQUEHANNA TRANSFER", loading passengers in New York, heading for the Susquehaana transfer station in Weehawken, near the Lincoln Tunnel helix.
I've seen circa-1940 photos, showing front-engined PS buses at the Transfer, when the new ACF railcars debuted on the "Susie Q".
After 1950, "Transfer" buses served the PABT, until the NYS&W abandoned all passenger service in 1966.........

I would like to have seen that article...I was always intrigued by latter day (after the ICC mandated that railroads had to divest their bus holdings after WWII ended)railroad owned bus lines.
Somewhere in my archives is a '70's era Illinois Central Gulf employee magazine, with a nice photo feature story of subsidiary (inherited from GM&O) Gulf Transport, whose routes extended all the way from St. Louis to Mobile. |
