Interestingly, when the MC-6 was in production, after the bodies were manufactured in Winnipeg Manitoba, they were loaded onto trailers and shipped to Pembina, North Dakota, where the engines, transmissions, and other components were installed.

It also interesting that, even though MCI's were becoming more and more commonplace in the fleet, GREYHOUND was still purchasing GM-built buses.

The last of the 4106s were delivered in 1964; Fishbowls were also purchased for both West Coast commuter services and the 1964-1965 World's Fair at Flushing Meadow.

GREYHOUND's final purchases from GM were the "Buffalo"-types (PD-4107), beginning in 1966; the final deliveries were made during 1967.

Nearly 300 4107's were in GREYHOUND service by 1967.

After 1967, all new GREYHOUND buses were built by MCI, which, of course, was owned by the company.

GREYHOUND's association with General Motors had ended.........

This nostalgic photo taken at Concord, back in 1970, has a 4103 resting between a veteran SILVERSIDES and a SCENICRUISER, recalling the days when GM-built buses still dominated the GREYHOUND fleet........

Here is GREYHOUND's 7th St. terminal in San Francisco, back in 1975.

Front and center, we have a Fishbowl sporting its new paint scheme; another Fishbowl (wearing older paint) can also be seen, as well as an Old Look...........

Nice, but the paint scheme is incorrect, as are the fonts…

The reason they continued buying some GM’s for a few years after starting buying MCI’s, was primarily because MCI was not yet able to produce enough to satisfy Greyhound’s needs…””

I also noticed that, first thing.

I was just glad to see at least one "6" spared the torch, and receiving a little TLC! Wink

traildriver:

On an interesting postwar note, the only MACKS purchased by GREYHOUND were the 30 C-49 suburbans for Bay Area commuter service (these buses arrived in 1957)

Too, on another interesting, related note, for a very brief time, four C-49s were in service with RICHMOND GREYHOUND LINES.

One fortunate MACK suburban resides today at the PBM.............

Just thinking.........

It was not until my brother gave me a copy of "THE BUS WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSES" (Stauss) in the late 1980's, that explained to me why NJT and other commuter carriers were purchasing MCIs instead of the usual Fishbowls and FLXIBLEs.

I then learned that, by this late date, neither builder was building transit buses; this explained to me why I was now seeing more and more MCI's on the streets.

Without a doubt, the big MCI has MORE than proven its reliability in suburban services, over the past few decades.

I STILL miss seeing the older MCI's sporting the colors of the old suburban outfits; they had become very commonplace........

Just came across this interesting page on the former GREYHOUND station in DC; sadly, by the 1970's, the handsome Art-Deco station (like most urban bus stations of that era, including our own "Port-of-Authority") had become a seedy magnet for undesirables of all varities.

One can only imagine what this streamlined depot was like, back in its heyday.......

Regarding Mack’s, while they decided not to purchase any, Greyhound did operate the one of a kind, MV-620-D demonstrater for a while…

https://www.curbsideclassic.com/bus-stop-classic/bus-stop-classic-bus-oddities-vol-2-mack-mv-620-d/

Scroll down, and you’ll see a comment I made, referencing its appearance to an MC-6.

It was loaned to the Museum of Bus Transportation in Hershey for a period by its owner (you can see it in the photo parked opposite the Golden Eagle). Not sure where it resides today.

traildriver:

Thanks for the link;I was always greatly intrigued by this unique bus (just imagine if GREYHOUND had a fleet of them!) Wink

The prominent "tail fins"reflect the era when this unique coachy was built, a time when American autos were sporting fins that grew to mammoth proportions by 1960! Shocked

In Great Britain, one style of intercity coach (LEYLAND "Royal Tiger") also sported "fins", even though fins were not "in style" in England.

I have in my collection a MATCHBOX miniature of this distinctive coach, as well as a vintage plastic friction toy...... Wink

Getting back to MACK suburbans.....

PSNJ had one demo, back in the 50's, that operated mostly on routes to and from Newark.

ORANGE & BLACK also rostered MACK suburbans until the mid-1960s; LAKELAND also rostered MACK suburbans through the 1950's.......

Here's the sole survivor of the "no nonsense" MACKS which GREYHOUND operated on Bay area-suburban routes, beginning in the late 1950's........
