Hard to believe that sights like this were once as commonplace as cracks in the sidewalk......

In my ongoing research for this interesting topic, I was very fortunate indeed to come up with this excellent page "HISTORY OF INWOOD'S KINGSBRIDGE POWER HOUSE".

There are historic photos here, as well (including many rare maps and blueprints) and much related to the both the "World's Largest Power Station" and the TARS streetcars as well.

There is much (extensive) interesting reading here........

"THE TROLLEYS OF WASHINGTON HEIGHTS AND INWOOD"* (here is another interesting page, w/several photos)

https://washington-heights.us/trolleys-of-washington-heights-and-inwood/

*Note the most interesting comment made by a retired MaBSTAOA driver in the "Comments" section; he recalls going down into the sub-basement of the old depot at 54th & 9th, and mentioning that there was an elevator that carried the streetcars upstairs for servicing (earlier in this topic, I had posted links to photos showing TARS' multi-level car house in Yonkers)......

In the book: "EARLY QUEENS, NY, IN EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS" (Seyfried/Asadorian, 1991) there are many photos where streetcars are to be seen.

There is also a map/track plan, dating from 1916, of the RIDGEWOOD depot (closed in 1930), which, at one time, boasted nearly seventy storage tracks.

There was also an outdoor yard that closed in 1921, when a new movie house was built.

Several lines are shown here:

PUTNAM AVENUE

FLUSHING-RIDGEWOOD

GATES AVENUE

RICHMOND HILL

WYCKOFF SHUTTLE

The map also shows the site of the former Bushwick depot, which burned down in 1923.

There was a complex junction of the lines at the intersection of Palmetto & Myrtle; a 1916 photo shows the front of the Ridgewood depot, as it appeared in 1916; several 5000 series center entrance cars can be seen just inside the building, which was built in 1881.........

Looking almost like a posed photo at a present-day trolley museum, these assorted cars make for an impressive portrait at the Crosstown depot (this facility saw its last trolleys in 1951).......

Back in the days of streetcars, "safety islands" were commonplace in many cities throughout the country, including Brooklyn, as this classic scene depicts.....

A new generation of public transit vehicles challenges the old at E. N. Y depot, circa-1940; the lineup of prewar buses (MACK and TWIN) is also impressive, here......
