In 1937, a two-car, off-peak "Westchester" train crosses the massive, towering Hutchinson River viaduct; hard to believe that, today, this monolithic span has long disappeared into history, like the railroad itself.......

A rare color photo of the elevated gate cars which were assigned to the Dyre Avenue line from 1941 until the early 1950's, when they were replaced by steel "Hi-V" subway cars........

A mid-1950's photo of a two-car train of steel (manual door) cars at the Baychester Avenue station; the deck roof car is here in the company of an equally-ancient "Hedley" motor......

A two-car train of steel cars (which replaced the wooden El cars on the shuttle) awaits departure at E. 180th St.
The photo caption is incorrect; note the manual door control linkage on the forward car's end, a sure sign of a "Hi-V"........

This photo dates to 1981, and is certainly nostalgic in its own right.
Note the old building on the right (with several dormers) housing stores; this was the former NYW&B Hunt's Point station house; here, the trains ran below grade, and the platforms were reached by stairways from the station building.
The Fishbowl bus, vintage autos, and store signage further date this scene, now nearly 40 years old......

Earlier, we had been discussing TARS routes........
The "U" line connected University Heights, Fordham Heights, with the busy transit hub at 181st & Broadway, and with the El at 238th St.
TARS cars stopped outside the NYW&B station at E.180th St.

TARS convertible #992 is seen here in the shadows of the 125th St. station of the 3rd Avenue El; at E. 180th St., TARS passengers could not only transfer to the 3rd Avenue El, but also, the IRT subway and (until 1937) the NYW&B........

This 1954 photo was taken near the E. 180th St. station; prewar IRT cars dominate here, but, on the far right, a group of old open-gate El cars can also be seen.
Also seen here are some of the NYW&B's old repair buildings......
