On this date in 1958, the first of fifty new air-conditioned rapid cars enter service on the "joint service" PRR/H&M line between New York and Newark (today's PATH)

These cars (built by ST. LOUIS) were owned by both the PRR and the H&M; the PRR-owned cars were designated "MP-52", while the H&M (later PATH) cars were designated Class "K".

Interestingly, only the PRR-owned cars were equipped with cab signals, which meant that H&M-owned cars could not be positioned at the front/end of a consist.

The new cars were also the very first production model, air conditioned rapid transit cars in the United States.

These sleek cars replaced the venerable old "Red McAdoo" MP-38 cars, that had been operating since the startup of the joint PRR/H&M joint service in 1911/1912.

In 1967, the PRR withdrew from the "joint service", and the Newark line became a 100% PATH operation.

The ex-PRR cars ("MP-52") were leased to PATH for a dollar a year, from the PRR/PC; PATH retired these historic (and speedy!) cars in 1989.

I knew these old cars very well over the years, from my childhood days of the early/mid-1960's, through my years of commuting into the city, beginning in 1979......

A truly classic scene: Penn Station, Newark, circa-early 1960's; a "joint service" train (note PRR Keystone on the storm door) awaits departure to HUDSON TERMINAL.

The classic-attired motorman and the elderly conductor on the platform (who was probably on the job in the McAdoo days!) truly date this nostalgic photo (how well do I recall "old tyme" H&M men like these fellows, growing up.....these were my heroes, back in the day!) Wink

Here's a 1970's interior view of a "K" car*; I rode these cars to and from the WTC for many years, beginning in 1979.........

After the "joint service" ended in 1967, the "K" cars were largely relegated to peak hour service on the Hoboken-Hudson Terminal (WTC) line.

By the later 70's, these cars also could be found operating on the Journal Square-33rd St. route (as seen here), during rush hours.

Note the classic "boxes" on the Conrail freight on the left, passing through the PATH Journal Square station, in this timeless 1979 view..............

Here's an interesting bit from a circa-1960 PRR "NEW YORK DIVISION EMPLOYEE TIMETABLE":

RULE 3393:

".......auxiliary or compromise car couplers for coupling H&M and PRR equipment are located at: "

"WALDO"

"HACK"

"KEARNY" (also, at the east end of the westbound platform at Harrison.

In regards to this rule, this procedure was used when DC power to the H&M "joint service" third rail was knocked out, and PRR power was required to moved the stalled "joint service" train out of the dead area........

Talk about NOSTALGIA!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

Yup, that's the old H&M/PATH GROVE-HENDERSON yard in Jersey City, in use from 1911 until 1990; I have many memories of that now-gone complex (I even found an ancient voltage meter and a rusty coil tension spring (used on the H&M cars for decades) in the weeds around the old yard, some time after it had closed (I also took photos)

The site is now totally built over; not a trace remains of this once-busy yard.

The "K" cars, in that photo, are still wearing their "old" paint scheme; the PRR keystones and original "PATH" lettering has vanished, and, soon enough, the cars will be totally repainted into the scheme they would wear until their retirement, many years later.

Thanks again for posting this nostalgic, long-gone scene from the days when PATH still had quite a bit of variety to offer the transit enthusiast..... Wink
