On this day in 1941, the Dyre Avenue line begins operation, utilizing the former row of the defunct NYW&B in the Bronx (NYW&B service ended in late 1937)

The new shuttle operated between the former NYW&B station at E. 180th St. and Dyre Avenue; a group of wooden "Manhattan" elevated gate cars were refurbished for service on this new line.

These cars ran well into the 1950's, when they were replaced by elderly steel IRT "Hi-V" cars.

In 1957, the Dyre Avenue line was tied into the IRT mainline, allowing for through trains to travel between Dyre avenue and Brooklyn.

At the onset of Dyre Avenue shuttle service, the former NYW&B express tracks and catenary were still in place, against the remote possibility that NYW&B express service might be revived.

Though turnstiles had been used in "Westchester" stations, these were not coin-operated; new turnstiles were installed, where passengers dropped a nickle into the slot.

Interestingly, the change booth clerks on this line only worked one shift; at other times, when the change booths were closed, riders paid their fares on the train, with the conductors equipped with a Johnson fare box.......

Here's an early view of the Dyre Avenue shuttle, using the refurbished El cars.

Note that the now-redundant "Westchester" catenary is, for now, still in place......

These views recall the heavy-duty, solidly-built "Westchester"; this was an opulent line that was quite advanced for that era.

Sadly, with the exception of the elegant old station houses on the Dyre Avenue line, virtually no traces remain today of this once grand and impressive electric railway.......

In earlier days, the big green NYW&B MU's once called here (E. 180th St.)

When these old photos were taken, however, only refurbished"Manhattan" El cars, and, later old Hi-V subway cars, loaded passengers who would be riding through to Dyre Avenue, which, of course, was the last stop on the Dyre Avenue line, and, also, the NYW&B's northernmost station in the Bronx........

This now-classic 1962 photo was snapped five years after the "orphan" Dyre Avenue line was connected to the IRT "main line"; initially through trains to and from Brooklyn (via the 7th Avenue line) served Dyre Avenue.

Today, Lexington Avenue trains run on the Dyre Avenue line.......

Here's an interesting view of E. 180 th St., circa-1950.

Note the Dyre Avenue shuttle train (using old gate cars) with a sea of prewar IRT cars in the right background.

Also, notice that, to the left of the shuttle train, one of the former "Westchester" tracks has been lifted......

Here's a modern-day view of the "humble" entrance to the former "Westchester" station at Dyre Avenue; unlike the many "mansions" used by the long-defunct railway as stations, this station was simply "pedestrian" at best.........

Looking much as it did when the "Westchester's" big MU's stopped here, the historic Morris Park station house still looks much as it did when it was still being served by the NYW&B's electrics......
