Here are two photos showing PS deck roof cars using "GOLDEN GLOW" headlights; the first of the two nostalgic photos shows a "HUDSON RIVER" line car (BERGEN Division), and the second photo shows one of the cars assigned to the "#7 CITY SUBWAY" (ESSEX Division).......

*Here is another nostalgic photo, taken circa-early 1950's, on the City Subway; this deck roof car car is obviously on a fan trip, signed for the "HUDSON RIVER"* line.

See:

*(the "HUDSON RIVER line had been converted to bus in 1938)

The "GOLDEN GLOW" headlight here would suggest a late afternoon/early evening run.

Here's another photo*.......

*A well-maintained 3200 series car at Franklin Avenue (on a fantrip), surrounded by a group of well-dressed traction enthusiasts, many, many years ago.......

In some areas, after PS abandoned streetcar service, some sections of track and overhead remained (at least for a time), to facilitate non-revenue moves to/from car houses.

The overhead could be used by deadheading revenue cars (or work motors) towing a disabled car back to the car house for repairs.

In a few cases, after regular rail service ended, the rail was left intact, but the overhead taken down*; in this situation, a PS service truck from the nearest car house/garage would be used to haul a disabled car back to home base.......

*One particular example of this type of situation could be found at the intersection of Central Avenue and W. Market St., (Newark); sans overhead wires, this non-revenue connection (between the "#21 VIA W. MARKET" and the "#23 CENTRAL") remained in non-revenue use until December, 1947, when the "#23" was converted to buses.

This view (late 1940's) shows these inside of the main shop area (known to PS men as the "Big House") of the Union City car house/garage.

Note the PS tow truck; it could be used to tow both disabled buses and streetcars back home for repairs.

Note, also, that the buses are all still wearing prewar PS paint.

The "#22 HILLSIDE", in later years, was operated by several "indy" companies, including M&G and FranMar; for many years, it was operated by ACADEMY, and, today, is operated by NJT (NJT foolishly cut "#22" service back from Palisades Junction, Fort Lee, to Nungessers, nearly 20 years ago).......

From September, 1938, through August, 1949, there were only two active car houses on PS's HUDSON Division:

"UNION CITY"

"GREENVILLE" (Jersey City)

From what I have read, GREENVILLE had a carpentry shop that was even larger than the one at Union City (at that time, the largest PS carpentry shop was located at ROSEVILLE (Newark)

If a UNION CITY-based car needed heavy carpentry work done, the car would deadhead south to the entrance/exit to the Hoboken El; here, the car(s) would then switch onto the tracks that carried OAKLAND cars to Jersey City.

From here, the deadheading car would simply continue to travel down to the GREENVILLE car house.

Prior to 1939, before all surface track connections between the HUDSON and ESSEX Divisions were severed, any car from any division (HUDSON/ESSEX/CENTRAL/BERGEN) could not only reach any car house on any division, they could also travel to PASSAIC WHARF and PLANK ROAD shops.

When a group of stored 2600 and 2700 series cars, stored at PASSAIC WHARF for several years, were recalled to wartime duty in 1942, they had to be first trucked to ROSEVILLE for rehab, and then, the cars that would see service on the HUDSON Division would have to be trucked a second time, and hauled back to GREENVILLE, an expensive, and labor intensive operation, to be sure.

PASSAIC WHARF (in its last years only being used as a facility to scrap surplus streetcars) was finally closed by PS around 1943.

When the last of the old PS cars went to scrap in 1954, they traveled under their own power (via the City Subway) out to Franklin Avenue, where they were loaded onto flatbeds for the trip to FEDERAL scrapyard.

When the last HUDSON Division lines went to buses in 1949, the cars were cut up into sections at the GREENVILLE yards (a VERY dismal and heart-breaking sight, you may be sure) and then trucked out to FEDERAL.

*The ex-TCRT PCC's arrived at PS's PLANK ROAD shops* in 1953, via flat cars; after refurbishment/repainting, the cars were trucked over to Warren St., where they ran under their own power down the abandoned inbound subway-surface ramp that had been used by cars of the "#21 VIA W. MARKET", until late 1951 (overhead was still intact, and was able to be "juiced up").......

Here are two rare and interesting views of ex-TCRT PCC's being delivered to the City Subway (late 1953/early 1954), at Warren St.

The cars are under their own power, and are entering the Subway proper via the abandoned inbound ramp, which, until late 1951, was formerly used by subway-surface streetcars of the "#21 VIA W. MARKET".

These ramps (and the old line poles) are still intact today, 70 years after the last revenue cars used them.......

Few photos exist of subway-surface cars of the "#21 VIA W. MARKET" using the ramps at Warren St.; however, there are a number showing "main line" cars of the "#21 ORANGE", switching off City Subway rails at Orange St.

In this circa-1950 photo, a "main line" #21 car is switch off the City Subway, bound for its terminal at West Orange.

Deadheading cars (until 1952) also used this route to reach the ROSEVILLE car house.......

On an interesting related note:

When the ex-TCRT PCC's arrived at PSNJ's Plank Road Shops (Newark) in 1953, via railroad flat cars, there was no overhead wiring remaining, but trackage within the complex was still intact and was usable (the overhead wiring was cut down after all rail connections to PASSAIC WHARF were severed after 1938)

This meant that the PCC's were moved about the shop area by tow trucks or "tugs".

Until 1938, Plank Road was also a car house, where the streetcars of several routes were based/serviced......

Here's a rare photo of one of the ex-TCRT PCC's awaiting unloading at PSNJ's Plank Road shops at Newark, in 1953.

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?76140

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)

Prior to the opening of the City Subway in 1935, a number of (deck roof) 3200 series cars, as well as (Compromise roof) cars of the 2600 and 2700 series were upgraded and rehabbed for high-speed City Subway service, at the Plank Road shops.

Compromise roof cars that were re-equipped with trucks salvaged from scrapped NJRT Jewett interurban cars were renumbered into the 8000 series (these upgraded cars were known as the "Rapid Transit 8000's") to PS shopmen.

The deck roof 3200-series cars had originally run in Camden; PS economized by rehabbing cars they already owned, instead of purchasing new rolling stock for the Subway.......

PSNJ streetcars in Camden, by the 1930's, vanished far quicker than those "up north"; by the end of streetcar service in Camden (1937) all but one PS car line had already been converted to either ASV or bus.

The 3100 series cars were identical to the 3200's, which were sent north for rehab for City Subway service, prior to the Subway's opening in 1935.

In Camden, car lines were numbered; however, unlike ESSEX Division cars, Camden's cars had route numbers displayed on metal dash signs, as seen here.......

From its opening in early 1954, the City Subway's Franklin Avenue loop station remained virtually unchanged until it was rebuilt in the early 1980's.

Here are several nostalgic views of PCC's at the now-removed loop......

In early 1954, the days of the old PS streetcars were rapidly vanishing; here we see a fantrip in progress on a snowy day, with a "new" PCC sharing the scene with a few of the elderly PS streetcars.....

From 1940 through 1953, the Franklin Avenue terminal was a modest stub facility, where connections could be made to several PS bus routes......

Through the 1930's, PSNJ operated several inter-divisional car lines along the Lincoln Highway, between Jersey City and Newark.

The last of these lines was the "#43", which went over to ASV's in 1938.

Streetcars came back to the Lincoln Highway, beginning in 1942, to serve the WESTERN ELECTRIC plant and the FEDERAL SHIPYARD.

These new wartime lines, in part, used existing trackage once used by the aforementioned abandoned lines (these lines were for war workers only; the general public were not allowed to travel aboard these cars, which began their runs at Journal Square)

There is a picture on this page that shows PSNJ streetcar ROW along the Lincoln Highway, prior to the construction of the Pulaski Skyway, which would have been in the left background.....

This 1936 photo shows one of PSNJ's ancient 1500 series semis, humming along towards Jersey City, in the shadow of the mighty Pulaski Skyway (the last of the semis were retired during 1937)

Prior to the opening of the Lincoln Tunnel in 1937, GREYHOUND (and other long-distance buses) also used this route.

Note, also, the PS bus on the right........

....it would be interesting to compare present NJT bus operations in Newark with PNSJ operations of 60 years ago.

Recall, not only did PS operate buses out of Penn Station, but also, the two-level PS terminal; during the rush hours, express buses to the PABT out of the PS terminal were departing on very frequent headways.

In those long-ago days, too, you also had DE CAMP and SOMERSET with runs starting/terminating in downtown Newark; ditto MOUNTAIN COACHES ("TRACKLESS TRANSIT"), whose defunct #144 ran between Penn Station and Caldwell.

IMHO, it was a combination of the aftereffects of the 1967 riots and the increase of suburban shopping malls that led to the overall decline in downtown Newark, which, of course, affected the buses.

In the early 70's, Newark still saw fairly heavy bus traffic; today, of course, bus traffic through Newark is but a mere shadow of what once was.......
