These view show the last TDH-5106 bought brand new by Fifth Avenue Coach. What made them special was the protruding destination sign box that house a fluorescent lighting fixture (clearly seen in one the photos).
These buses also had fluorescent interior lights and lounge seating in the rear section of the bus.
The driver stanchion was also unique in that it featured an aluminum door partition. They also had Grant fare boxes.

Now THIS is what I call a REAL bus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I was a kid, these were ALWAYS my FAVE "Noo Yawk" buses (aka: "The Bus With The Sign That Sticks Out In The Front"!)
IMHO, these handsome and unique buses were retired FAR too early; at the VERY least, I wish they were at least sold to another operator.
At least ONE should be in today's Museum Fleet.
GREAT PHOTOS, thanks for posting!!!

......if a certain Mr, Kramden was assigned to drive one of these babies, I could just see him leaning out the driver's window, and shouting:
"HOW SWEET IT IS!"

After the shifting of Fourth Avenue to one-way northbound traffic, some 5 routes terminated south at 8th Street and Broadway, then traveled on Fourth Avenue to 9th Street. Would this have been associated with the variant of the 5 which went all the way through Riverside Drive up to 157th, as in operation from 1965 to 1988?
And indeed, 2645-2694 - along with Surface Transit's 3020-3059 (renumbered 3291 and 3221-3259 in 1963 by MaBSTOA) - were the last ever TDH-5106's produced. I agree it's a shame that none were saved.
Though this is after that order, here is one of the higher-numbered air-conditioned buses from after 6-10 were transferred from FACL to ST. Notice that on #6 running on Bx-2, ST's lettering is in the Copperplate Gothic font and newly added, not only contrasted with the earlier 'FACL' layout but even ST 'New Looks' 3161-3210. Also notice the cloth roller curtains up front, which replaced the mylar signs on FACL #10.[/img]

Another innovation on those 5106's was the passenger-operated safety exit door...not sure if that was the first model to have them, but the bus in the photo clearly does...

They and those ordered for the 'Tee-Yay' in 1957-58 (the 7000's and 9000's) had this feature as well.

Didn't the TA buses have plastic (unupholstered) seats, as well...again not sure when they introduced those...

Great pix! I find it interesting (in the 2nd shot from the top) that FACCO was specifying the swinging door for the B/O.
