(see previous posts)

As the "PHOEBE SNOW" (and, also, the "LAKE CITIES") it was not in the least bit uncommon to see SANTA FE express box cars in the consists of the "PHOEBE" (recall, also, the SANTA FE, like the E-L trains, also served the Dearborn Street station in Chicago)

During their last few years of operation, "shorty" lightweight IC express cars were commonplace on the "NEW YORK MAIL" and "THE OWL"; these two trains were the very last two E-L through trains diagrammed to carry RPO's, which would be gone by 1968.......

Here's a timeless portrait of the "BINGHAMTON" in 1954, running between Hoboken and Barclay Street, on a bright sunny day.

The only change to the E-L ferry fleet after the merger with the ERIE in 1960 was the replacing of the "LACKAWANNA" herald on the stacks with the new E-L diamond, and the boats being re-lettered "ERIE LACKAWANNA RAILROAD".

I grew up with these fine, coal-fired craft and have many happy memories of them (I can STILL smell the coal smoke and hear their throaty whistles today!) Very Happy
