Handsome, now-classic charter buses on the site of the old Luna Park (Coney Island), 1954......

On this day, in 1955, the Manhattan section of the 3rd Avenue El was closed, between 149th St. and Chatham Square.

This 1955 photo shows the El station at Houston St.; of particular interest is bus #463 (operating on the "21"), one of the prewar YELLOWS that, in later years, was modernized with an Old Look-style front.....

Bus #463, as of 1950, had been assigned out of the 100th Street depot where it was assigned to the 1 and 2 Madison Avenue routes. By 1955 it had been switched to 54th Street depot where the 21 - Houston Street-Avenue C line was based then. It was part of an order of buses that came in 1939 (417-475).

W.B.:

Welcome back....your valuable input was missed! Wink

I always thought that the remodeling of those old YELLOWS with modern Old Look-style front ends was quite imaginative; these were NICE-looking buses, which, IMHO, would have looked right at home with any of the Jersey City "indies" I grew up with, 60-odd years ago..... Very Happy

I'm guessing that these buses were the 1947 TDH-4507's? (2000-2129/2200-2261).......

Marcy Avenue, 1959 (W.B.: You should like this one!)

Truly something for everybody here......aaahh, if only one could only travel back in time, and see and hear all this classic transit activity! Very Happy

I sure like it...that was my "home station" until I moved to Bensonhurst in 1952. I lived just a couple of blocks from there. Cool

traildriver:

Glad you liked the photo of your old "home station"! Wink

I would think that the less noisy of all the transit vehicles seen parading for the photographer were the trolleybuses! Wink

Though the elevated BMT line remains today, prewar subway cars have been gone for decades, even in MOW service.

Old Looks and MACKs have also long since disappeared from the scene, as have the sleek trolley buses (last runs, 1960) Sad

How much transit history was forever frozen on film, with this wonderful old photo....... Very Happy

I saw that. If any trackless trolleys were in the picture, this was one year before they were all replaced, presumably by the new kids on the block a.k.a. 'Fishbowls', no?
