Those Twin's did present a more 'modern' appearance than the GM 'Old Looks', IMHO...

traildriver:

Well, recall, the "original" Old Looks (manufactured by YELLOW) in 1940, featured flat windshields; a few years later, the inward-slanting windshields (which characterized all future Old Look models) became the standard.

If you were to compare the windshields of a postwar TWIN COACH with those of a Flex New Look (aka "Dangerfield") it is easy to see that the Flex windshields were basically much-enlarged versions of those used on the postwar TWINS.

Such "modernistic" windshields, just after the War, must have, indeed, been quite "futuristic" in appearance.....

Even the front doors seemed to anticipate the later "Dangerfields," not just the front windows . . .

NYCO, too, seemed to steer clear of them as well.

Agreed! But not just the windshield, but also contributing to the sleek appearance of the Twin's were the larger side windows, without the iconic standee windows of the "Old Looks". Also, the bit of "bling-bling" silversiding the Twin's had. There design was even used in a deluxe intercity version that American Buslines and perhaps some other carrier's purchased.

W.B.:

As I've mentioned many times in the past, through at least the mid-1960's, the Hudson County "indies" I knew and loved so well, while operating virtually anything and everything (pre- and postwar) ALL steered clear of postwar TWINS.

In fact, the FIRST time I even saw a photo of one was in a library book, about 1966 (the photo showed a CTA example); I thought it MOST exotic! Shocked

Speaking of "oddballs", recall that, FACCo operated (for a spell) the WHITE 1150-D-7's on route #15; by 1960, these "odd ducks" were sold to Memphis.

Why FACCo, then busy purchasing GMC's and MACKS, even ordered these buses is still a bit of a puzzler, at least to me.

Then, too, recall SURFACE "W 50", a WHITE 1144 demo; again, why even a "demo" WHITE was tried out is another "quirk", given that SURFACE was then heavily into purchasing GMC's and MACKs......

Good points, all! Wink

Funny you mentioned the lack of standee windows; in late 1951, SOMERSET purchased eight Model FS-40 "FAGOELINER" suburbans.

These buses were the last group of buses built by the TWIN COACH company; SOMERSET's featured Old Look-style standee windows.

The short-lived FAGEOLINER came in five models, seating, 33, 36, 40, 44, and 51 passengers.......

Recall, since the 1920's, FACCo was a die-hard YELLOW customer; PSNJ, likewise, was steadfastly loyal to YELLOW, and, in the postwar years, exclusively a GM customer, with the exception of a small number of ACF-BRILL suburban C-44's (sold to DE CAMP after only a few years) and a MACK demo.

In fact, PSNJ's large ASV fleet (with the exception of one lone MACK) were also built by YELLOW.

By the 1960's, the choice of bus builders had been narrowed down to but two choices, GM and FLXIBLE.

This, also, sealed the fate (in many fleets across the country) of buses built by WHITE, MACK, ACF-BRILL and TWIN COACH; with parts becoming more and more difficult to obtain, it is no wonder why these buses would eventually be replaced by either new Fishbowls or "Dangerfields".

If "Noo Yawk" and "Noo Joisey" were not at all enamored with the postwar TWIN COACHES, Chicago, on the other hand, certainly was; in fact, the far-flung CTA purchased at least 1,000 Flxible Twin Coach Model FT2P-40 buses.......

When I lived in Omaha (1971-1973), the Omaha Transit still had a sizable fleet of Twin's. IIRC, they were mostly or all, propane powered. I think they even had some articulated units at some time...

Meanwhile, the smaller Council Bluffs (IA) transit, came across the river into Omaha with GM New Looks....

Keep in mind, too, the earliest Flx "Dangerfields" had twin nomenclatures - "Flxible" and "Twin Coach." This was on the demo "100" bus that FACL used in 1961 for use on the FACCo's 4 and 5, and NYCO's 10, routes. (Weren't most pics of that bus taken outside 135th and Broadway as parked on the 135th Street side, I wonder?)

traildriver:

San Francisco's MUNI operated 90 TWIN COACH postwar trolley buses as well, for many years; this was also the largest postwar trolley bus order for TWIN COACH.

Detroit also operated 60 postwar TWIN trolley buses, these being delivered in 1949.

In Brazil, one system took delivery of four postwar TWIN trolley buses, the only South American system to do so.

San Antonio, Texas, once operated 30 Model FLP-35 "FAGEOLINERS" (w/ standee windows).

Many companies around the nation (and in Canada) once operated postwar TWINS, but they were certainly in the minority, especially when most systems were investing in new GMC's......

W.B.:

Though we have mentioned this elsewhere in the past, imagine if FACCo had survived, and ordered "Dangerfields" as well as Fishbowls?

I DO like the idea of a a hundred or so "Dangerfields" painted up in FACCo colors...... Wink
