In a way, I could tell this was '64, as the 1961 model Fishbowls still had the rear windows as 3-piece . . .

W.B.:

I was thinking along the same lines; here, again, is proof that there was indeed, years ago,"diversity" within a fleet, that, to most people, all looked alike, with no variations whatsoever amongst the vehicles.

I'm assuming, that, being parked at 36th St. yard, that these buses were assigned to Brooklyn routes.....

Just an afterthought on this photo I had posted yesterday.......

What routes had these Old Looks been assigned to (and what depot) when they were still in service?

As I had commented previously on a 1964 photo at 36th St., I'm thinking that these Old looks had previously been Brooklyn buses......

Retired Old Looks were still to be found at the 36th St. yards when this photo was snapped in 1973.

Two yellow-painted Lo-V's, the undisputed workhorses of the IRT into the 1960's, are seen here enjoying a well-deserved rest between the calls to work train duties........

In 1974, a battered (but still formidable) IND R-1, one of the original "Independent" cars of the early 1930's, has now been relegated to work train duties.

At that time (1974) prewar IND cars could still be found in service, particularly on the then rush-hours only "CC" line (growing up in the 60's, I can well remember prewar IND cars on the "AA", when going uptown to visit the Hayden Planeterium and the Museum of Natural History)

A "new blue" New Look can be seen in the background, on the right......

Here's an interesting vintage b/w photo at 36th St. (undated); note the MACK (clearly OOS) on the right........

Another classic 1950's-era b/w shot at 36th St.; Old Looks and wooden El cars truly make for one of those classic "Gee, I wish I could go back in time!" photos! Very Happy

Note the "Q" car; it is still sporting its original railroad roof; these roofs were later cut down for clearances prior to the "Q's" entering service on the Myrtle Avenue El in 1958, replacing the last open-gate cars.......

1954:

A train of second-hand SIRT ME-1's (note lead car has been repainted) is here front-and-center amid "Q" cars, gate cars, and Standards.

Old Looks are on the left........

And notice on the left, huge piles of 150 lb. 'NMC' third rail, to be installed in various areas (presumably to replace antiquated 75 lb. or 150 lb. IRT third rail along certain parts of the IRT).

W.B.:

When I was looking at all that third rail ready to be transported to whatever location and installed, it reminded me of how virtually everyone (except transit historians) are under the assumption that "all third rail is alike".

All one has to do is to read up on not only the "old days" on the subways, but also, the elevated lines of old, and they will learn that all third rail was NOT alike, nor were third rail shoes, not by ANY means!

Recall in 1964, when the R-32 "Brightliners" ran down to GCT for public display via the NYC, from the Mott Haven yards (with a NYC engineer and a "Tee-Yay" motorman in the cab); the standard "Tee-Yay" over-riding third rail shoes were adapted on the new set of subway cars so that they could draw power from the GCT's co-developed under-riding third rail (the WILGUS-SRAGUE system)...........

While on the subject of third rail (or "thoid rail" in old-time Brooklyn-ese, if you will!) Wink

Excellent information on installations both here and abroad.

* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_rail

*Some interesting photos and info here; note that the METRO NORTH rolling stock (ex-NYC/NH) have third rail shoes that are designed for both under-riding and over-riding third rails.

Also interesting is that London's tube/Underground network uses a fourth rail as well (an interesting "arcing" photo for this one, here!)

Though no buses are on hand here, this 1938 photo of the 36th St. yard is still quite interesting.

Note there are no steel subway cars in sight; all equipment seen here are open-gate El cars (quite a few convertibles, as can be clearly seen!)

Fast-forward now 1954........

Note that there are now no wooden El cars in sight at 36th St.; the yard is now full of BMT Standards, IND cars, and ex-SIRT ME-1's.

Also, the IND cars are carrying BMT route numbers instead of the usual IND letter codes.

Ironically, the very last prewar IND cars in service (retired in 1977) were then running on the former BMT...........
