Fellows:

Strange that there seems to be virtually no discussions here on school buses (after all, they ARE buses!)

These big yellow buses have indeed been an integral part of Americana for decades; over the years, there have been many changes in designs, safety features, emergency door locations, and much more.

A very close friend of mine is a retired school bus driver (he drove for nearly 20 years...and SURVIVED!) and has always said the same thing, that there is not all that much discussion on school buses, except from die-hard school bus enthusiasts.

Let's take a few minutes to pay homage to those bright and cheery yellow buses (which also make for COOL toys and collectibles!)....... Very Happy

"NYO"

As can be seen clearly here, the school buses used in Great Britain (aside from the THOMAS) are indeed QUITE different than those buses here at home in the States.........."Blimey, Mate! 'ere's a real bloomin' go!" Wink

WAYNE......another well-established and old name in the school bus industry.

Interestingly, WAYNE helped to develop the school bus in its earliest form.

Note, too, that this company is also quite diverse, going beyond the school bus sector..............

The parish elementary school in Seaford draws students from ten or twenty surrounding school districts. I have often wanted to stand across the street at dismissal with a clipboard or camera to list the variety of equipment and names on the side, but in this era, men observing school kids is a no-no. Our school district uses Educational Bus Transportation of North Amityville, with new equipment. Levittown owns their buses. The topic of school buses is very interesting. Is New York City the only city that requires left-side doors on school buses? That is a helpful safety feature on one-way streets.
---
Also, do we have photos of school buses before they were painted yellow in regular district service? I have a 1957 photo of my college Bluebird, not yellow, not painted School Bus, because it was merely a school bus model used by college students.
