In this 1981 photo, "Dangerfield" #9056 seems to have gotten off quite lightly, graffiti-wise.........

In this 1978 view, "Dangerfield" #5609 (still sporting "Tee-Yay" green), despite it being so late in the 70's, appears to be (thankfully) free of graffiti....... Very Happy

This photo of "Dangerfield" #9065 indeed shouts (all TOO loudly) "NO RESPECT"!

In this busy (and nostalgic) scene from 1980 (Flatbush & 3rd) the "Dangerfields" that dominate this picture indeed are virtually pristine, at least, when compared to the subway rolling stock of that era........

With the clock atop the Dime Savings Bank building still working.

There's another "bit player" that stood amongst the buses passing by many a house in some neighborhoods (or stores that sold TV's, if they had the station on when such things were being run) - in the mornings, the test patterns that signed on many a TV station, when "the tube" was on as the buses were rolling along. On June 15, WPIX (Channel 11) celebrated its 75th anniversary. In honor thereof . . .

. . . and especially since they were the home, from 1958 onwards, of The Honeymooners.

Too bad that none of those saw any sustained service in Manhattan. But then, we all know what the 'Tee-Yay's' priorities were with relation to bus allotments and replacement of older models, no? Would that this would have been in front of the UN building on First Avenue, running on the M15.

W.B.:

Ahhh, test patterns.......how well I recall these, when most stations went off the air for the night (after "The Late Show", and the "Late Late Show" (recall the timeless "syncopated clock", with the apartment house lights coming on, and then going off?

Sadly, most, if not all,of the actors seen in those old flicks are now "late" themselves.

I also well recall, on certain stations, the "color bar" test patterns; as always, accompanied by that distinctive "humming whistle"!

Too, recall, the "Star Spangled Banner" being played, at the beginning and end of each broadcast day, showing a montage of various landmarks across the country?

WPIX....ahhh, yes.......The 3 Stooges, Popeye, The Little Rascals, Cap'n Jack McCarthy, Officer Joe Bolton, The Honeymooners......EXCELLENT programming, for sure! Very Happy

Where have the decades gone.......... Confused

W.B.:

I truly (and steadfastly) believe that there was, indeed, some "upper echelon", grand "muckety-mucks"(old Irish slang, here!) at the "Tee-Yay". who were (for whatever reason) strongly prejudiced against the "Dangerfields".

The TOTAL opposite of the CTA, where new bus purchases through the 60's were virtually all "Dangerfields"; this, though, comes as little surprise, as the CTA was a HUGE customer of TWIN COACH for many years (the CTA was operating nearly 1,000 propane-powered postwar TWINS, aka "Oddballs", into the 1970's)

I have always thought about how interesting it would have been, had the "Tee-Yay" favored the "Dangerfields" over the Fishbowls, instead of just the opposite..............

It's also worth noting that the three TA liveries are represented in this view.

X-Astorian:

A good point, for certain!

Yes, photos like this, showing buses of the same type sporting several different paint schemes, always makes for an interesting view.

Regarding Fishbowls and "Dangerfields", my all-time favorite paint scheme was the "Tee-Yay" green, with the stylish script over the windows.

I could easily live with the two-tone blue, but the bland, ho-hum paint schemes that came afterwards simply did nothing at all for me.......

Interesting thought........

Recall, the mighty PSNJ (NJ's largest bus operator) was obviously not at all enamored by the "Dangerfield"; just as how PS was a loyal YELLOW customer through the mid-1940's, it was also steadfastly loyal to GM, into the TNJ era.

In fact, the first "Dangerfields" in the Garden state did not appear until 1976/1977, when a massive influx of NJDOT-purchased "Dangerfields" began making steady inroads into many NJ fleets.

This order of 866 buses was the largest New Jersey bus order, up until that time.

Among these buses, there both transit (rear door) and suburban (single-door) variations........

Here's an NJDOT (TNJ/NJT)"Dangerfield" at the Lincoln Tunnel helix (note ex-PS Fishbowl following), inbound to the "Port-of-Authority, back in 1981.....
