Pic #3383 of FACL 2502 would have actually been taken on April 16, 1957; I remember seeing a New York Times article mentioning this was one of two optional color schemes for coming rolling stock they would soon unveil.

It was also the day after Surface Transit's M-105 (and presumably, also FACO Division's 1 - Fifth Avenue and NYCO Division's 22 - Pitt and Ridge Streets) had its service reduced to one trip a day to maintain its franchise - a status it would retain until it ran for the last time on March 1, 1962.

All:

A couple of quick questions.....

Were the late model Old Looks (the buses with the extended front roller sign box) FACCo. or NYCTA buses as delivered?

2:

When did the NYCTA/MTA retire the last of the FACCo. Old Looks? (and New Looks)

Thanks in advance......

In response to the first query: Only two entities, both inter-related, had the extended front roller sign box on their "Old Look" buses: FACL (2605-2694), and its Surface Transit subsidiary (3020-3059). I.I.N.M., the last of the former (starting with 2645), and all of the latter, were apparently the last TDH-5106's ever built by GM, if the production lists on the OMOT website are of any indication. None of the TA buses (the 7000's or 9000's) had such front box.

As for #2, MaBSTOA last ran those in 1970, and they remained in service in the outer boroughs (especially Brooklyn) on TA routes through 1972; 1973 was when the last of the FACL (and ST) New Looks were put out to pasture, especially after T6H-5309A's 4860-4919 (the very last GM built of that type for MTA/NYCTA/MaBSTOA) first arrived in the summer of '73.

W.B.:

This is exactly what I wanted to know; thank you! Wink

IMHO, it seems to be that the ex-FACCo/ST New Looks were retired quite early; they certainly were not all that old at the time, and many other buses stayed in revenue service for many more years than that.

Thanks again for your input....... Very Happy

All:

Just my opinion, but I believe that another book of the FACCo. is needed, one that not only goes "in depth" with the 1962 strike, but also, at least gives decent coverage to the New Looks.

As I had said earlier, a work on MABSTOA would be a great addition to any bus enthusiast's/historian's library; this would be especially useful for fellows like me, who are not from New York, but are interested in really delving into the history, as well as viewing photos not previously published.....

Just curious if these "retirees" were either FACCo./ST buses.......

Pic 2230 is def. ex FACCo (it specifically states it was once 2211, ergo one of the 1945-46 FACCo bus orders). I'm reckoning Pic 1547 was an STS/ST bus, given how much of a basket case it was, as well as the number.

W.B:

Thanks again! Wink

Here in my area of northeastern New Jersey, square window Old Looks were commonplace on the various "indy" companies through the mid-60's.

I remember them beginning to vanish (along with the MACKS and WHITES that these companies also rostered) about 1966/1967, when the first New Looks began arriving.

From pictures I've seen, I know that whatever Old Looks with square windows were still in service withthe NYCTA during the early New Look era did so until several years into the 1960's.

I also remember them when I was a LOT younger....... Rolling Eyes

Date this one to 1962.

Even at this late date, road-weary veteran #1700 was still hard at work.......

Actually taken at Ninth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets (looking northwest on Ninth at 50th). You can check Google Maps or whatever service for how that area looks today. The route was 11 - Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues. The exact date, however, is in question, as the strike would have been still on . . .

W.B.:

Thanks for bringing up the strike date; yes, that indeed could put the date of the photo in question.

It does appear to be from the early 1960's, at any rate.

Battered old buses like #1700 made no bones about telling the public that they had to work HARD for a living, for many a year; I recall many a battered, road-weary Old Look in my area, once upon a time.......
