W.B.:

Thanks for the info; for some reason, this fellow only remembered the buses saying "COMPREHENSIVE" on the sides (he would have been a grade school kid then)

The ERIE stopped ferry service to Chambers St. in December, 1958; by that time, they had already moved most of their trains up to the DL&W terminal at Hoboken (The Erie-Lackawanna merger would not take place until late 1960, however)

I also know that NY RAILWAYS streetcars also served the monolithic "Union Ferry Terminal" complex at the foot of West 23rd St. (the last boats departed this terminal, once served by the ferries of several railroads, in December, 1946)

I have also seen 1940's photos of this terminal with buses in place of the NY RYs cars.........

On a related note, here's a circa-1951 photo of a prewar MACK* at the NYCRR's West Shore ferry terminal at the foot of W. 42nd St.

Ferry service between W. 42nd and Weehawken (also between Cortlandt St. and Weehawken) was shut down in March of 1959)......

*Note that 7 CENTS was enough to pay for your fare! Shocked

The front bus roll sign must've been from that year - has the same type associated with street signs - oh, and '5 TO 178 ST BROADWAY' and a handful of Bx- bus routes' destination signs up front.

And that bus, 8066 - 'twas out of the Jamaica depot then, before it (and 39 other buses marked 8041-8080) were shuttled to Crosstown Depot in Brooklyn by March 1972.

W.B.:

Does Jamaica depot still exist today?

If so, is it the original facility, or has it since been replaced with a newer building?

What routes were/are based out of it?

Not only does it still exist, there have been plans to expand it. The 'Tee-Yay' had other depots/garages in Queens, notably Flushing (now Casey Stengel) and, after 1974, Queens Village. As of 1969 Jamaica housed: Q-1, Q-2, Q-3, Q-3A, Q-4, Q-4A, Q-5, Q-5A, Q-17, Q-36, Q-42, Q-43, Q-75 and Q-77. When QV opened, Q1, Q2, Q36, Q43 and Q75 were transferred there (as were a few Flushing depot routes); Jamaica as of September 1974 housed Q3, Q4, Q4A, Q5, Q5A, Q5AB, Q17, Q42, Q49, Q49, Q77, Q20X (later X20) and Q24X (later X24).

W.B.:

Good to know that Jamaica is not only still with us, but might also be expanded Wink

IMHO, the borough of Queens is not often discussed, bus-wise, but discussed a great deal more, regarding rapid transit (subways and els)

Certainly, we discuss routes in great detail that run (or ran) in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn*, but not all that much on Queens (*Brooklyn, of course, was, is, and always will be, a a borough noted for extensive rapid transit lines, hence, even more discussion!)

And even less with Staten Island (I know I'm guilty of that myself; discussing "transit" in Staten Island for me usually includes only the Ferry and the SIRT)

The bus routes of Manhattan and the Bronx have long held a special appeal for enthusiasts/historians, due in part to the rich history of the old FACCo. and SURFACE.

Like rapid transit, if you look closely enough, there is indeed something for everyone, if you just know where to look......... Wink

"NYO"

BTW:

Though most Mets fans who use transit arrive via the #7 IRT Flushing line, what are the bus options? (what buses served Shea, back in the day?)

Personally, I'll never get used to CitiField as now being "home turf" to "The Amazin's"....to anyone even remotely interested in the Mets, "Shea" was indeed hallowed ground.

"Citifield" is far too "corporate generic" for my traditional "Noo Yawk" tastes.

At least, "Bronx Bombers" fans can STILL use the hallowed name of "Yankee Stadium" today, carrying on an eons-old tradition......

In terms of Queens, there were four "zones" of which the TA had jurisdiction over two. Green Bus Lines, Jamaica Buses, Queens Transit, Triboro Coach et al., took care of the other zones prior to MTA Bus taking over them all in 2006.

W.B.:

The most "bus watching" I ever did in Queens was from the windows a LIRR M-1 or M-3, passing through Jamaica, en route east, out to Ronkonkama, to visit my (late) best bud Jim (with whom I also worked with for years) in the very late 1990's and early 2000's.

The RTS always, for some reason, stood out in my mind, and still do so today.....
