Once in a while I find a face to put on an already listed coach among the hundreds found here in S-60 To Smith Haven Mall's ever growing historic record of Long Island operators of yore.

Seen in a photo taken in August of 1950 on Deer Park Avenue in Southwestern Suffolk County and heading for Freeport in Nassau is fleet # 37 - a 1939 20 passenger Mack modeled a an 'Improved' CW-3G and the only one of its likeness purchased by Utility Lines, Inc. of Babylon, New York.

The very popular Mack model CW-3G, which gained its power from a 354 cubic inch, 100 hp, 6 cylinder gasoline engine mounted transversely at the rear and coupled to a three speed mechanical transmission, was perfect as a low volume feeder to main trunk lines and well over 1,100 were sold between 1935 and 1941.

Utility Lines, Inc., an affiliate of Bee Line, Inc., of Rockville Centre, New York was formed in 1932 by the purchase of a number small unrelated companies in Suffolk County and served Patchogue, Medford, Center Moriches, Port Jefferson, Greenport and Freeport from Babylon.

Photo courtesy of '4509bus' and is available at eBay as item # 351179462063.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note.

Seen sometime in 1946 trundling through downtown Great Neck and probably on its way to Kings Point is fleet #6 - a 1945 29 passenger Ford Transit modeled as a 29-B and operating for Universal Auto Bus Service Corporation (UABS) of that affluent northern Nassau village.

The Ford Transit, affectionately known as a 'crackerbox' and very popular among small operators or as feeders to trunk lines of major companies, gained its power from a 239 cubic inch, 95 hp Ford 'V-8' gasoline engine mounted transversely at the rear and coupled to a three speed mechanical transmission.

As can be seen in the lower frame, UABS dates to about the same time as Fifth Avenue Coach motorized which would make the company one of the oldest in the country and possibly the very first bus line on Long Island.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, add two 1909/1910 Autocars (model and fleet numbers unknown) to roster - it's almost a sure bet though that they were #1 and #2.

UABS operated two basic local routes which radiated from the Great Neck railroad station and was eventually taken over by Schenck Transportation and then the County of Nassau as routes N57 and N58.

'S-60 To Smith Haven Mall' for photo archive - no need to take note;

Seen sometime in 1972 at its company yard is fleet# 79 - a 1965 35 passenger GM Coach modeled as a TDH 3501 and one of three likenesses numbered between 79 and 81 operating for Jerusalem Avenue Bus Line, Inc. of North Merrick, New York.

The light duty TDH-3501 appeared to be of GM's heavier 'Old Look' stock but, other than its exterior treatment, it was far from it with its body riding on a conventional truck chassis and its power derived from a 478 cubic inch V-6 truck Diesel known as a Toro-Flow and mounted transversely at the rear with coupling to a beefed up version of the Dual Range HydraMatic transmission used on Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles of the era.

While the HydraMatics, as they were dubbed as being, did fairly well for small operators and even as feeders from low volume lines to trunks for larger properties, they came as a disappointment to some companies that assumed them to have the guts of their larger cousins.

Of note on number 79 are the rarely used sliding glass passenger sashes.

Jerusalem Avenue, one of Nassau County's smallest operations, ran lines out of Hempstead to the south shore towns of Seaford and Merrick.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is available at eBay as item # 171523752271.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

I'm uncertain as to where the focus of this report should be placed but it appears to be a Nassau operator of yore and I suppose we must assume that, until otherwise identified, it should be listed here.

Seen sometime in 1986 at Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey is fleet #141 - a GM Coach modeled as a TDM or TDH-4515 built between 1953 and 1959 and operating for Vintage Coach Lines, Inc. of New York (according to its license plate).

#141, ex Trans Bridge Lines, Inc. of Bethlehem, Pa., is signed for 'N4 Merrick Express' and awaits its charges made up of home bound New York Giants fans.

GM confused the identification issue on these buses by modeling them as Transits when they were so obviously Suburbans with their drop sash windows, high back seats on platforms and parcel racks.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is available at eBay as Item # 171550743879.

I haven't been able to find anything on the company. Though since the sign has the N4 it would seem that the bus spent sometime in Nassau before the photo was taken so I'm sure everyone would agree that it deserves to be included in the Vintage Nassau thread.

This is just one company and bus we'll have to keep a eye out for, but I'm sure we will track down both histories at some point in the future.

The name of the company sounds like it was a charter operator.

The only search suggestions I have is to see what company ran the N4 prior to the county take over ans possibly go from there..

Also possibly the NYS Dept. of State's website to see if they have anything on the company

The paint job on the bus seems fairly new in 1986 if that is a clue.

Good luck in your search.

Tried that, couldn't find anything with that name. So it's possible that it was either started in the in the 20's or sometime around there or could have been a DBA name that was never regerstired with the state.

Bee Line had the N4 before Nassau took over. The one thing with that though is that Bee Line didn't seem to have the model Mr. L said the bus in the photo was or at least none have come to light as of yet. Infact no company in Nassau seemed to have had that model or at least no record has been found as of yet. So it seems to really be a mystery. No matter what it is one great find and must have a good story behind it.

One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier post was that maybe it's possible that the roll sign didn't come with the bus. Maybe whoever owned the bus somehow brought the roll sign and just placed it in the bus to try and give it some type of connection to Nassau's history, especially if the company was based in Nassau. Again just a though since stranger things have happened.

i tried the FMCSA site and came up blank. Wonder if the webmaster can solve this mystery ?

Also tried NJ, no luck.

I tried looking at the picture with a magnifying glass, Yes, NY plates could not see the owner. My eyes are not so great. Positive that its Vintage and not something else?

If so, maybe the Webmaster Knows something?

ECA,

I mentioned the license plate only in the sense that #141 was registered in New York but you can take as gospel the fact that the name of the company is Vintage Coach Lines.

I think we might have to look at a little reverse engineering on this one;

Trans Bridge Lines (TBL) of Bethlehem, Pa., who sold the bus to Vintage, is still in business and may have records in their archives concerning the transaction and exactly where the bus went - perhaps someone would call their office at (610) 868 6001 to see what we can come up with.

BTW; Trans Bridge was about the only company that added water filled bumperettes to all front bumpers as is seen on Vintage #141 above and on one of TBL's New Look Suburbans below.

Best regards and Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family,

WCA

Obviously that suggestion will have to wait until at least Monday. Let's hope that they have records going back that far.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too

The only thing I can add at this time is that the livery on this bus is definitely Trans-Bridge. Their present day paint scheme still has the gold and green stripes.
Update:
Just found the following photo for sale on eBay by seller tysghd586. Description is...Trans-Bridge General Motors Old Look Suburban Bus #141.

As Tom Jones sang "Its not unsual" for a company to sell a bus to some driver who wants to go into business for himself. He gets the bus and just paints over the name of the operator and puts his own on it, leaing the livery alone. Maybe he doesn't have the $$$$$ to repaint it.

About 15 years ago, I was crossing Vanderbilt Avenue at DeKalb Avenue when a coach bus was heading south, with "Chartered" on the roll sign. It was clearly an ex-Peter Pan bus from the livery. PP took the decals off but some of the paint had adhered to the bus.
