The date is August of 1947 and the place is Bull Line Piers # 22 and 23 on the Brooklyn waterfront where we see two small coaches preparing for a long cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico to start their seconds lives as guests of the City Motor Coach Company of that tropical Caribbean Island.
The buses, all gussied up and still wearing the flags of the Mercedes Bus Line, Inc., of the small Gulf Coast city of Mercedes, Texas, are (from left to right) a late thirties Yellow Coach Model 733 and an early forties Ford Transit Model 29B.
Some operators have named their buses after people and I thought the 733 was christened in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt but it turns out that the sign in the window merely meant that its terminus was E. Roosevelt Street!
Off the record and just to let you know that I'm still on my toes; there are a couple of things that bother me about this picture not the least of which being the fact that the 733, the last of which were built in 1939, looks absolutely brand new right down to its wheel hubs and the other thing that I don't understand is why these buses from a Gulf port very nearly at the Mexican border would be shipped all the way up to New York before making the trip to Puerto Rico?
Just a curiosity which doesn't diminish the value of the image at all.
Photo thanks to Judahpraise and is up for bid on eBay as item # 120864854291
