Thanks to Ty Angel of the NorCal bus group, we get a first glimpse of the Provost model that New York City Bus has selected as a replacement for the aging MCI D 4500 fleet.
Some brief information below;
Sainte-Claire, QC – Prevost has been awarded a contract by MTA New York City Bus to manufacture 90 Prevost X3-45 motor express coaches. The pilot vehicle will be delivered in July and the other 89 coaches are expected to be delivered between October 2011 and January 2012. The contract between Prevost and NYCT also includes, structural integrity testing, tailpipe emission profile testing, and training.
They are very impressive looking and I certainly hope they will perform as well as the MCI's although they don't seem to be complete without the shiny 'silversides' touch that we are so used to!

The MTA really needs to do something with its paint scheme – a thin blue stripe on a white bus just does not work on these buses, IMO. It is among the most boring paint schemes I’ve ever seen (aside from those operators who leave their buses completely unpainted).

They must be finishing these at the Nova plant in New York state. I just know they aren't purchasing new buses direct from Canada, eh?

The styling is reminiscent of the Van Hool C2045 (although not as boxy). |

JD | I agree. On this and many other buses, the MTA is using increasingly "minimalist" decal jobs. |

I wholeheartedly agree! However, with the economy the way it is, less decorations and paint jobs (other than white) are very cost effective. Many local transit authorities across the nation operate white buses with the minimum of graphics - including Metrobus in St. Louis where I reside.

Then I suppose I have to admit that LACMTA's buses in their array of bright oranges and reds with touches of gray aren't so bad to look at after all.

I'm not sure I buy their economy argument. The MTA is now using decals to apply this scheme to their buses - would it be that much more expensive to use a decal that features a more interesting and/or colorful design? |

Especially the 60 footers with the wheel covers. |

One unusual feature on this Prevost is a 2-button door control: push the green button to open the doors and the red button to close the doors. |

Bob,
Speaking of the door; is it my imagination that it seems to be awfully narrow?
Or is it just a an optical illusion?
Regards,

I agree, Mr. L; that door does look a bit narrow. |

Another unusual feature is a power-operated driver's window. The old MC-6's also had a similar feature. |

All of our Prevost's have the two button door control, and the electric power drivers window.
The one on the MC-6 was an air operated window, IIRC....
As far as the entrance door width...it is probably the standard witdth, although the bifold type is different than the usual 'sedan' type the Prevost's are usually equipped with. The wheelchair access is via a separate door further back, ala MCI D4505's. |

It may resemble a Van Hool, but let me tell you...it rides a heck of a lot better! IMHO, it is the best riding bus on the road, this side of an Eagle!
If you ever notice, most of the entertainer/motorhome high end coaches are derivatives of this model, with a raised roof. For good reason. |
