I hope I am posting this in the correct section...

A while back I was treated to a picture of a trackless trolley on Staten Island, and I speculated on whether they ran routes similar to the SIRT. Apparently not. I found this article on a web site called "Secret Staten Island" (secretsi.com). It has some good information, pictures, and maps. I hope you enjoy...

Great stuff. Thank you!

The picture of the R114 route bus reminds me of something I was thinking earlier with the pictures of the Bingham Macks in your other posts today... when various models of buses were in service on Staten Island, I would wait at the bus stop at the Great Kills station of the SIRT and hope that a Mack would make the left turn from Amboy Road onto Giffords Lane. Just like my dad, loved the Macks. Smile

Hankg42,

Nice find and you're in the right thread.

The Trackless Trolley cars in the photos were supervised and contracted for by the City of New York Department of Plant and Structures (DPS) but were owned by individual operators.

What appears to be a fleet number on each actually represented a permit number issued by the city.

It was the city's intent to fill in on routes that were abandoned or, in some cases, to begin new routes but without the expense of buying and maintaining equipment.

Hundreds of such 'Jitneys' from as far away as upstate New York, Connecticut and New Jersey were 'on call' to the city and were often used in strike situations.

Pictured is another slightly distorted image of a DPS car in New Dorp, Staten Island.

Photo courtesy of the Brooklyn Museum.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

All:

Note that vehicle is lettered "DEPARTMENT OF PLANT AND STRUCTURES"; this was also the operator of the Staten Island Ferries at that time.

Just thought you'd enjoy a little "trivia"......

Somehow I just knew that Mr. L would have some additional interesting information! Thank you.
